Check out this  MSDN Forums Client .
I think this was required - Offline Forum Reader.
Well done Microsoft.
Channel9 will be added to list ?

Doubtful, C9 is its own codebase.

That's always bugged me with Outlook and Live Mail, no forum view.

I will check this out and see if it is any better.

Edit;

  • Hierarchical (threaded) view of conversations

  • Nope, same view. They don't get it,.. I want a forum style view, not a stupid tree.

Come on man...Did you read this part?

Okay you've hooked me and I'm excited, how can I help? There are a couple ways for you to contribute to the project.
    • Tell us what we're doing right or wrong. Feel free to give us your feedback using the Discussions tab and let us know if this would be an useful tool for you, or if you think we're heading in the complete wrong direction.
    • Tell us what you would do! If you have other great ideas on features that we should consider you can either create a discussion in the Discussions area, or create a work item in the Issue Tracker for people to vote on.
    • Put your code editor where your mouth is. Eventually we're going to have to actually write the code for this thing. When we get to that point we will have plenty of opportunities for you to contribute to the project in a tangible way and to help implement features.

    Yeah, yeah,.. you are right,..

but I am way too lazy Wink

I code 8 hours a day for a living, so when I get home I like some time off.

I coded a tool like this 2 years ago. At the company I worked with we used Exchange as a forum. I got fed up with the email bombardment, so I wrote my own tool that did exactly what I want.

Maybe I will create a custom view, put my code editor where my mouth is,.. Wink

    edit; downloading as we speak,..

OK but remember what it is replacing. NNTP. There's been a big move away from newsgroups (which you can't control) to forums, which you can, and you can put ads on. So a tree view is essential to keep those old f@rts (MVPs *grin*) vaguely happy.

If I get in, I am going to nuke the treeview.

Maybe I can steal the channel 9 idea, "in response to". So that the old farts like you Wink can still imagine a treeview in their head.

I doubt if they'd let you nuke it (because it's addressing a lot of the complaints about the forums, like no threaded tree view); what's wrong with having TWO views that you can switch between?

If you stumbled and fell down, it doesn't mean yet, that you're going in the wrong direction.

I know this is a week old, but I've been on vacation for a few days.  Smiley  I'm glad you found this, it's the project that my team is working on.

    A couple comments:

    a) For those who don't like the threaded tree view, you're not alone.  We have plans in the spec to enable flat and hybrid views in the client, but for the majority of the people who we are trying to help with this, the threaded view was the first priority.  The other views will come along as we get farther in to the project.

    b) What we've released so far is just a CTP, basically we released a version that was the project at the end of the first sprint of work.  Lots more functionality will be coming!

    c) While we don't have plans to add C9 directly in our current project plan, I've tried to make the devs keep in mind the idea of supporting other forums that offer a webservice API to allow someone to integrate whatever forums they like.

    d) Since the code is available, if you want to make your own version of the tool that would be very cool!  We do want people to contribute to the core project, but if you just want to take it and make your own version there's nothing stopping you.

So, is it searchable in the client?  Can I search for 'index corrupted' and get a list of forum discussions with those words in one of the entries?

This is mainly how I use MSDN forums, these days -- through a search engine based on keywords.

That's one of the things I asked for (or rather shouted loudly about). I want it integrated into desktop search damnit (and there's a feature request on codeplex for it; go vote!)

    Apparently it's low impact Perplexed

Integrating with Windows Search is something I really want us to do.  It will probably be a task we tackle after we get posting to work.  Smiley

We think we know what's involved in hooking it up, it's just a decent sized task that we haven't gotten to yet.

We'll also have some form of internal search for searching the posts, but we haven't decided quite how that's going to work yet.

Simple, hook up to WDS for the internal search too, why reinvent the wheel? I'm sure you can drag Paolo off Windows 7, it's not like that's important

(And I'm aware I'm part of your target audience, heh, there's a big MVP discussion going one, you poor sod!)

Is the MVP discussion still going on in the newsgroups?
