To protect my country - I suspect not. The States isn't my country.
About doing the right thing - you're aware no doubt that the United States funded the previous Iraq regime against Iran, funded the Taliban against Soviet Russia, and supported Soviet Russia against * Germany?
I'll have you know a lot of other people fighting against US agression in Vietnam, Iraq, Korea etc fought to protect their country, watching their friends and brothers die defending what they knew was "right".
I'm not trying to demonize the US here, or even diminish the importance of those brave few who fight and die for their country and their principles - a man who is willing to truly sacrifice himself for someone else is a rare thing.
That said, it cannot be stressed enough that the view that the US is all about democracy and liberty and that when they go to war they are doing so for these principles against fascists is false. There are numerous examples of the United States either funding or deliberately turning a blind eye to dictators in the world, and there are countless examples of US companies commiting bribes in the third world in order to gain business and arms contracts.
US politicians just like most people in the public eye don't do "the right thing". They do what they need to do to keep office, to further their own aims and out of pragmatism for the decisions that are vastly more complex than the thirty second summary on the news.
So please, next time you decide to take your "liberty and democracy" to the world, be aware that the world thinks you can keep it to yourself; we're fine as we are, thank you very much.
