I finally got Vista. I love it. I can run VS Express WebDev, MS SQL 2005, 2 virtual servers, IE with 5 tabs open etc with Aero.
The RunAs pop-ups are much better than the crude way you had to do it in XP. I've heard people complain about the irritating security features but so far I love it, it's much easier.
This is much more than a slightly upgraded XP, Vista deserves more love than it gets.

Edit: for the record, I have an Athlon dual core 1.8G and 3GB ram.

Clearly you haven't seen enough Apple commercials and you're still basing your evaluation on your silly and useless personal experience.

lol, can we have a bit more irony?
I find Vista haters fall into 4 groups, from most common to least common:

1) People who have never used Vista and take the word of others at face value (or are full of crap themselves)
2) People who have used Vista a bit, but were frightened by the changes
3) People who used Vista early on (Beta 2 or RTM) for a decent amount of time, but the bugs and/or breaking changes ruined their experience
4) People who have a piece of hardware/software that they spent a lot of money on and doesn't work because of developer incompetance or the company who made the product no longer exists
5) People who run Vista but feel the UI is scattered, inconsistant and unfinished.

"I can run VS Express WebDev, MS SQL 2005, 2 virtual servers, IE with 5 tabs open etc with Aero."

WOW, I wonder if my pc with xp could handle all those tasks Smiley .. and crikey you're really pushing the boundaries of IE there.. i thought IE's ugly UI was only developed to hold a few tabs..

See I also find Vista users fall into 4 groups

1: fanboys
2: noobs
3: the unfortunate who got it bundled with that last pc or laptop sale
4: and developers

I don't fall under any of those useless groups you put together mathew.. although you could say some of incompetence seen within so many areas of Vista is frightning tbh...  ok I do agree with jamies 5th one.. although i'd have to be crazy to still be running Vista...when a fully customized XP is sooo much better. Will wait to see when MS have an OS out that doesn't have huge gaping holes of suckyness associated with it.

6) People who only have dual core processors and 1 GB of memory. Smiley
On the old crappy hardware that I have now, it's possible to have more applications running in Vista than I was ever able to get in XP. I'm sure it's a combination of factors, but the boundary where Vista suffers from resource starvation is much farther out than XP.

Don't forget to add in the people who will never run Vista because to do so would be to admit that all of their vitriol and ignorance was misplaced.

So why is XP better, sorry I missed that?

I upgraded a 2 year old Compaq laptop that I gave to the missus with Vista, it doesn't run Aero but she doesn't care everything else works just as good as it did with XP.
If you had used the word 'noobs' earlier on, then I could stopped reading your post much earlier ....

Well if you want to come over my house and get Vista to work fast that's fine, because everything I have tried so far including disabling almost everything at startup and it's still unbelievably slow. I'd love to be part of the "lawl Windows Vista as actually super fast and everyone else is lying" group, but ironically I'd be lying if I was to join that group right now.

whatever .. frightened by the changes lol..  I care little for you replies they have ignorance written over them! The issue is not with users, its with microsoft making poor improvements. very few are frightened by change.. if the change is good... stupid changes that haven't been fully thought out properly, designed and implemented in ways that are a real benefit for users and not just noobs or at least allow them to easily make changes to suit them and there workflows.

"But all kidding aside, which OS is the right one, what must I choose?"

well there are very few good reasons to upgrade to vista only reasons not too bother Smiley I hear Win7 around the corner ... I wonder why?

"So why is XP better, sorry I missed that?"

here is a small one.. go try improve/customize explorer.. try qttabbar and tell me vista explorer isn't a pile of *, among many other areas Smiley

"If you had used the word 'noobs' earlier on, then I could stopped reading your post much earlier ...."

go get your eyes tested then.. anyone could see the word 'noobs' written in that reply at a single glance.
