My friend wants to move to Vista 64bit and has already bought Vista 32bit (his had it for a few months now), is it possible to buy an upgrade to go from Vista 32bit to Vista 64bit or is he required to go buy another copy? I remember with Windows XP you could trade in your 32bit XP copy for a 64bit copy... do Microsoft still have anything like that?
I believe you can only do it with a full retail copy.  OEM and upgrades are out of luck.
As far as I know you can't do it with a boxed copy either.

Edit 1: I'm wrong. You can go from 32-bit to 64-bit with a boxed version but only if it's Ultimate.
I thought Ultimate came with both in the box?
