Winona Ryder? Where? I didn’t see her in the trailer.

What I did see was a flat fake looking mat painting of the enterprise as its getting built.

The cop with his little hover bike (ala star wars) was kind of dumb. I would have thought that in the 23rd century conventional police officers on the planet earth would have led way to some other way of law enforcement. Heck, I had hoped there wasn’t a need for law enforcement as such in the future. Their screwing with Star Trek I tell ya. =)

and what’s with the Enterprise Bridge? Some one said it looked like a Mac Store.

I took that as an exclamation, like "Sweet Zombie Jesus!". Or maybe he's talking about the new Spock Smiley

I'm afraid. This might turn out to be a good restart of the franchise, or it may end up being a typical entertaining yet forgettable FX-laden action flick with a thin veneer of Star Trek sprayed on top. Or it could just be plain bad. I can't tell yet. The fact that the story invloves time travel doesn't give me hope.

Time travel is a very slippery slope, and is rarely done well.

Not really enough information to tell yet. It could be a decent movie, or it could be disastrous. Let's not forget that, all pretenses that it's a restart aside, this is an odd-numbered movie. Tongue Out

I'll do what I'll always do: I'll see it, ignore any and all critics (except Tim Lynch; but the odds of him starting Star Trek reviews again aren't very high Tongue Out

So, you stopped watching Star Trek back in the sixties then? Time travel has always been a staple of Star Trek, for better or worse. It has led to some good stuff (e.g. City on the Edge of Forever, First Contact), and quite a lot of bad (the final episode of Voyager, ugh!). But I would not condemn the movie just for including time travel.

It looks pretty neat, anyway. I can live with the visuals as presented in the movie. The question is, is about the characters with a tortured personal core to the story, ala Wrath of Khan or First Contact? Or is it just an action flick? Only time will tell.

Not necessarily. For the most part Star Trek has always been very judicious in using time travel, and has generally tried to be conscious of the ramifications. They never used it too often.

When I realized that time travel was going to be a central theme of Enterprise, is really when I lost interest (and seeing knobbly headed klingons in the first ten minutes Smiley

). There were just too many silly things in that series. Generally Star Trek has a decent track record compared to the rest of scifi when it comes to doing time travel reasonably well, but Enterprise just rubbed me the wrong way.

I still hold on to hope brought about by a rumor I heard a few years ago that J. Michael Straczynski was toying with a Star Trek series writer's bible. I immensly enjoy his other works, and a Star Trek series from him would be awesome.

I guess my comment was mostly knee jerk, because when time travel episodes are bad, they are so bad that they stand out the most in my mind.

My all time favorite time travel episode is Trials and Tribble-ations from DS9. It was just plain fun. I was somewhat pleased with the Year of Hell I-II from Voyager. Some of what happened was stupid, but the ending where none of it ever happened was cool (although quite predictable).

One of the Best ever (for me) TNG episodes was time travel based, Yesterdays Enterprise.

True on those accounts, but in Enterprise when they destroyed the Xindii weapon, came back to earth in the * past, that was just a time travel story arch where they had no idea what to do after the main storyline was concluded. Just plain bad.

The series started out a bit like the other Trek shows, with little in the way of a coherent story. I really got into it when they decided to have a solid overall story arc with subplots along the way. Although, an integrated story made it a real pain before the days of DVR's when you missed an episode.

I adore DS9, and Trials and Tribble-ations was fantastic.

Strangely, I do actually like the first seasons as well. I disagree with kettch that it was like other Trek shows; while it did lack the overarching story, it had a lot of political machinations and story types that TNG could never do. Take a look at Duet for instance, TNG could never have such a downer ending. Dax, Battle Lines, Progress, Duet, In The Hands of the Prophets, The Homecoming, The Circle, Cardassians, Necessary Evil, Whispers, Blood Oath, The Maquis, The Wire, Crossover and The Collaborator; these are the season 1 and 2 episodes that I consider to be among Trek's best, and that's a long list for just two seasons. Smiley

Sure, the Dominion war brought a lot of great stuff to DS9, but I wouldn't discount the early seasons so easily.

DS9's main problem was that it kept trying to reinvent itself, which makes it quite uneven at times. DS9's other main problem was that the writers couldn't write an actually funny episode involving the Ferengi if their lives depended on it, yet somehow they kept trying every year. Tongue Out

Fortunately its strengths greatly overshadow these problems. Smiley
