Truphone allows you to use your iPod as a phone.

Ok, so it currently appears a bit limited, but will Apple really allow VOIP software on the iPod to compete with the iPhone?

Why would they pull it? Skype {fring} has been on the app store for a few months now.
aren't there some limitation in using them? like availability to use them only when using a Wi-Fi connection, meaning it won't work with a 3G connection?

Apple said a while back that VOIP is okay on the app store, as long as you only do it over Wifi (which is the only way you can on the iPod Touch).

The lack of background processes limit any VOIP app's usefulness, anyways...  can't exit to browse the web or run another app and continue to receive calls.

If you have a JailBroken phone or ipod touch, it is VERY easy to install some goodies to allow both background processes and voip/itunes music store/[insert bandwidth hog app]/etc over 3g and edge.
