Better laptop deals after christmas? | The Coffeehouse

Hey all - sad story - my laptop got stolen (the backdoor left was left unlocked by mistake Sad

). It's even more sad 'coz I only just got it...
Anyhow, I need a new laptop, I have my eyes on the exact same laptop as as the one that got stolen (hp dv7t or equivalent)... Do you think I should wait till this holiday season is over to get better deals?

Wait until after Christmas, definately.

As for suggestions:

Any ThinkPad
Any MacBook Pro
Or if you feel like surrending to conformity, a Dell Latitude (or whatever they're calling their enterprise-class laptops now)
Nothing where the case is made of plastic

If your laptop isn't your main machine, why not go with something more portable than a 'regular' 14" laptop (a 12" or smaller ultralight thinkpad comes to mind). I also strongly recommend buying a docking station.

I don't recommend TabletPCs anymore; Slates are impractical for general-purpose computing, and the premium for a convertable is too much for little gain (no really... unless you want Wacom Cintiq-like computing it isn't worth it; handwriting recognition's a pain, OneNote isn't really that responsive, and it adds weight and power-draw.

I would expect after x-mas better deals just because all the makers are hoping to sell something...anything.

If you buy from Dell's Outlet you might find more choice before Christmas... Generally speaking it gets restocked as people order but then cancel laptops and now is the time for that...

Dell make "cheap but cheerful" laptops. If you want higher quality go with Apple, or Sony.

Get yourself a Dell Vostro notebook. Inexpensive, no frills, utilitarian, but solid. That what I like about them. Good components, no extra plastic shiiet (XPS). Did I mention they are inexpensive?

It depends on where you live.

In my region, exchange rates have crashed and distributors are holding prices only until existing stocks are cleared, which is pretty much now.

Once that is done, prices here will start jumping 30%+ and I expect this will all be happening post-christmas.

Well, for those of us in the UK the sales have started early. Curry's and PC World have got a ton of reduced stock, I'm going to see if my card will handle another purchase!
