This is the 366th day of the year... Thus it doesn't exist. I'm sure your Zune will work tomorrow. Just in time for Microsoft to pull the plug on Zune, shut down the DRM authentication servers and to screw you all out of tons of money.

I guess a quick fix for this is to take it apart and disconnect both the battery and the hard drive. Don't know what it would do to your warranty.

I was going to make fun of this, but it would just be way way too easy.

The way it's being handled is bad. No official MS announcement; just news articles and threads on the Zune support forum. Really, really shoddy.

Microsoft is so far behind it took them 9 years to get to Y2K?

From what I've gleaned it seems that this problem just has to do with today exactly, and will fix itself tomorrow?

Can we get a C9 interview with the programmers that let that kind of flaw in? Smiley

Welcome Change
Be nice, people...

Re Zune 30 Bricking: I'd imagine the flaw is under review as we type. You think the Zune team might have an inkling of what's going on? They are preparing a statement; one that will contain accurate information which explains the problem they are investigating. My Zune 30 is also a paper weight right now. It's an unfortunate side effect of a coding error for sure.

Re: C9 Team: Let's not turn this unrelated coding error in Zune30 into a means of offending the developers who spend so much time building, maintaining and innovating Channel 9.  That's not cool at all and I wouldn't expect this type of crap from Niners. Relent.

C
DateTime. Now - DateTime.Parse("1/1/2008") > 365. So will Zunes fail on December 31 every Leap Year until they patch this?

There is a good book I read once called "Just Say No to Microsoft: How to Ditch Microsoft and Why It's Not as Hard as You Think" which has an entire very long chapter which offers a fairly decent explanation why stuff like this happens. And no it's not easily adapted to summarization. Smiley

The rest of the book goes over strategies to replace every single Microsoft product you or your organization uses. Definitely a good book for people thinking of migrating away from Microsoft products (don't worry fellas, I'm not .. yet!). But even a good read if you are just interested in Microsoft's history and how it functions.

Human after all
Isn't that book kinda on the lines of you can prove anything given you string enough facts together to a degree that you get to the part where pretty much every reader will be unaware of the reality of some facts and therefore not question them.. also people argued that command line is great and that average users should get to understand it too..

Its just all not quite in touch with reality.. and I don't use Microsoft products because their Microsoft branded.. I'm not some fanatic apple victim.

It's very well regarded actually. In fact one famous Microsoft employee recommended that all Microsoft engineers read it. Smiley

But really, it's a good book to read for anything interested in Microsoft, or work with Microsoft products.. not just people switching from the Microsoft universe. It really changes these WTF?? moments to AHA! moments, at least for me. And it's definitely not just mindless MS bashing or poorly sourced stuff. The criticisms in the book are very fair, but it's more informational then critical anyway, and even has a little bit a praise.

Turns out it was a bug in the driver for the internal clock part used in the Zune 30 (but not the other models). It didn't handle the extra day in this leap year correctly. The solution is to let its battery run out so it'll shutdown, then recharge and start it up again after noon GMT 1/1/2009

I kinda like it Smiley If anyone wants to send me their old Zune for free for hcking around with it, I'll take them Tongue Out

PS: How does code formatting work again?

With me it's a full-time job.
I guess the Zunes are all going again now but.... the Kirk picture did make me smile.

I think the Zune team ought to just print themselves some T-shirts now.
