ie8: can you turn off ​accelerator​s?

Having them on makes selecting text nearly impossible

(i looked under internet options and accelerators app itself.. nothing about turning off)

Not that I found. You can disable each type of accelerator one by one but that doesn't really fix the problem.

One of many reasons why I am running Firefox 3.1 which in my opinion is better than Firefox 3.0 and IE8. They finally got the scroll wheel problem fixed and also improved the UI. In fact most of my issues with Firefox are gone in this release. The only thing I continue to dislike about Firefox is the terrible Bookmarks management stuff (which is pretty bad in IE8 too).

If there are any browser devs reading here is a revolutionary feature: Search on the bookmarks/favorites! I know mind blowing, right?

IE8 does that (start typing in the address bar and a query to the local index is sent scoped to favorites and history) and I think Chrome does it as well...

IE 6 had that too...

But what if I have multiple favourites with similar names? Most modern browsers need to re-think how they do Bookmarks because right now most of them are pretty bad at it. The situation also hasn't really improved at all since I've been using the Internet.

PS - Random note: Firefox does "forget" which monitor it closed last on and the only workaround for that is to resize the browser on the monitor you wish it to open on before you close it.

Tools / Internet Options / Advanced / Browsing / Display Accelerator on selection.  Clear this checkbox.

I'd agree there's a lot of improvements that could be done, but Firefox's bookmark manager does have nearly all the features you'll need.

In regards to searching the address bar...

IE 6 had that too...

No, IE6 and IE7 can only autocomplete based on the first few characters you type. Firefox 3, Opera, IE8 and Chrome will search your entire history and bookmarks list from the address bar, each browser uses a range of meta data to make searching easier so you don't have to start with "http://asd...".

Where do I start pointing out what is wrong with the bookmarks organiser?

Well first of all they take an important feature like bookmark search and hide it behind the scenes. This means in order to find a bookmark as part of my browsing activity I need to stop, step away, locate the search feature, search, open it back into the context of the browsing activity and then step back into what I was doing. Totally unintuitive.

The "bookmarks organiser" isn't even a what it claims to be. It is a "Library" and my bookmarks are hidden on "All Bookmarks" -> "Bookmarks Menu." All I have to say to that is - huh? Again totally unintuitive. Even damn right confusing.

The whole thing is a mess. They need to remove that Library UI and the bookmarks toolbar and then add in-line search to the bookmarks menu; after that is done they should go back and implement a dedicated bookmarks organiser UI with more advanced search features (e.g. by date, content etc) and an organisation focus.

Except that you don't have to stop, step away, and locate the search feature in Firefox 3.  You can search bookmarks (and history) from the address bar, and bookmarked pages should always appear above history results (unless you've got a non-bookmarked history result that you're visiting extremely often).

Opera has this feature already. Too bad almost nobody uses Opera.
