I always wondered what it would be like if Apple replaced the MacBook keyboards with a multitouch keyboard. I imagine not having tactile and aural feedback from a keyboard is a huge no-no, but it might be neat to make your own keys and attach different characters or even macros to them.

Customize it to Dvorak or an entirely different character set (Cyrillic, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Hebrew, Arabic).

If we ever solved handwriting recognition, you could write out letters with your fingers (like fingerpaints but digital) or pick up a stylus and use the surface as a tablet.

Tap a key and have your screen appear beneath your fingers and select text or items on the screen with your fingers. Tap another key and have your keyboard reappear with the screen and your selection back on the monitor.

Etc. etc. just brainstorming.

Apple already has a patent out for buttons on a touchscreen, like an iPhone, to have tactile bumps based on the buttons on the screen. Get this onto a keyboard you can have a keyboard with, say, a 18" x 8" slim LDC with the ability for buttons, sliders, etc etc. Put that expensive Optimus to shame Smiley
