And have any thoughts (likes, dislikes, etc.)?

I've been wishing for a netbook-type laptop with 1280x800 (and more usable keyboard) for a while now, and just discovered the Mini 12 (don't know how I missed it).  Looking for something that will be primarily used for note-taking (with OneNote/Word), light web browsing, and remote desktop (actually, LogMeIn) to my full-size laptop (which has a 1280x800 screen, hence the magic number of 1280x800 for screen resolution).

The main concern I've seen in reviews is that the laptop isn't fast enough to perform well with Vista, but I'll be purchasing it with XP, so I wouldn't think that should be too much of an issue.  Otherwise, it looks like it fits exactly what I'm looking for (cheap, lightweight netbook).

I bought one for my mother. As far as I know, it hasn't come in yet.

Well the Ubuntu and Windows XP versions came out at around the same time, and very recently. The one that came out late Nov/early Dec was the Vista version. I might go ahead and review it too, since I didn't any reviews of the Ubuntu version out there either.

Well I got it today, and DAMN. It's a fine piece of work. I'm quite impressed by the build quality (it doesn't feel like the crappy plastic of most laptops these days), the lightweight, the thinkness (seriously it's nearly as thin as the Air), the battery life, oh and the thing runs cool with NO FANS!

The Ubuntu software on it is amazing too, boots up in like 15 seconds (how do they do that?), suspend/resume feels instant, like not even 2 second to suspend and basically instant to resume.  It's not the same Ubuntu as you download on the website though, Dell has some kind of custom UI which goes pretty well with the netbook. It even uses special Dell repos, and the arch is not x86 but "dell-lpia", so I think all the software on the machine is compiled with hardware specific optimizations. Perf is pretty decent, but it isn't blazing. It's pretty good though, especially for "common folk" like my mother.

Now for the negatives (the positives far outweigh them though):
The only thing I found wrong with it is the webcam seems to have some kind of delay in the program "Cheese". I don't know if it's Cheese or the webcam or something, but it's somewhat annoying.
Dell managed to "crapify" Ubuntu this time around. It's not as bad as the Windows installs Dells tends to put on their machines, but there is Yahoo Toolbar and a bunch of Yahoo links and software bundled with the PC. There is also a lot of Dell stuff bundled with it, like a Dell chat application and other stuff. All this was pretty trivial to disable though.

All and all it's a GREAT netbook and I give it the Bass thumbs up award.

It is a very nice piece of kit...

But I do wonder if it is a toy or a tool? How much work can you really do on such a small screen, particularly one without a specialised OS designed to be run in such small scale (e.g. A Phone's OS).

I would be interested in getting one but I likely won't. I've owned a PDA before and didn't do much with it other than admire how "cool" it was. I can't see myself doing anything different with this unless I could browse the internet, write code, write documentation, and chat with people via an IM client.

Well AFAIK it's perfectly capable of running Windows XP, I am not sure how VS and the typical Windows devel stuff runs on it though. Emacs and gcc work great Smiley

I ordered it 10 days ago.

Oh I have no doubt it can run XP and maybe Visual Studio but that doesn't mean it is a tool good enough to allow you to code. If it is too laggy, difficult to read, or type then that kind of hurts your ability to do much of anything. I won't try and review it without playing with one but let's hope they release a "netbook" style laptop with a full screen in the future (e.g. a laptop with solid state drive).

I've owned my share of 15"/15.4" clunkers. Never again!

Well I think the big attraction of this laptop is it's small size and lightweight. Again it really "feels" like a Macbook Air form factor. Not bad for a $499-599 laptop. Another thing is you could probably use this one on your lap without damaging your nuts. I haven't used it for an extensive amount of time, but it doesn't seem to get as hot as the other laptops I have owned. Interestingly enough as far I as can see it's fanless as well.

But that's Intel powered; won't that upset your AMD sponsors?
Oh yea, my 37 million dollar sponsorship deal with AMD.

I sure hope they didn't see my interview with Craig Barrett
Did you check out the HP mini 2140? 1366x768 screen resolution, 6 cell battery, an accelerometer to protect the hard drive and a cool all-aluminum chassis!
