Hi,

Is it possible in, Windows 7, to add a network share as a library location?

I have my music files stored on my  network. When i try to add the share \\ServerName\Share as a libray location i get an error ”This folder cannot be included because it is on a share that is not indexed.” The help link in the error message does not provide usefull information regarding this.

Any ideas?

/tony

I believe the share needs to be on a machine that has Windows Desktop Search installed on it. Certainly it works with my music folder on my Windows Home Server.

Correct, the network location needs to be indexed.

Not so fast .... I can't do that because I connect to NAS storage unit, with proprietary software (Matrox). What are my options then ?

Thats interesting when I tried this with one of the server shares on my home server I got that same message (the network location needs to be indexed).

Is a share on home server automatically indexed?  (I don't recall seeing a flag anywhere?)
I haven't the faintest idea. I would have assumed so. If not, remoting into the Server desktop should allow you to configure indexing, shouldn't it? I know that I didn't have to to anything specific, but then I was using the default music share and I also have music sharing turned on which might well do some magic itself.

Home server has an older version of WHS. I don't think the update is automatic; so you need to remote desktop in and install it by hand

Thanks Blowdart. I knew some random guy from Channel 9 would have the answer (you see I've never really forgiven you for that have I?)

Not many, that is a scenario that we are not supporting in Windows 7 beta.
Ok, I installed WS 4.0 on my Windows XP Pro "server" and it reports indexing has completed, but when I try to add network locations to libraries in 7, I still get the error about them needing to be indexed. Is there something I'm missing here? Firewall/service/startup settings? Voodoo?

Thanks
Uhh nevermind. I just tried it again (for the 100th time) and it spontaneously worked. Still, any ideas as to what may have been the issue?

Any chance for a change of heart in before it's released ?
Unless the appliance was indexing itself and exposing a compatible interface that WDS can query against, Windows would have to do everything itself. That could cause a lot of network traffic for quite a long time until it got everything indexed. Even then, it would still have to walk the directories to find out about changes.

My Sonos player does it quite frequently. Picasa 3 also .... why not Windows ??

I don't doubt that it would be acceptable in a home setting. Now think about that enterprise that has documents exclusively on network shares. Think about Monday morning. Those 10,000+ employees hitting the shares all at the same time with indexer requests for new items, etc. Think of the bandwidth Smiley

Absolutely .... for me, this is purely for home-sharing purposes, music, documents and video from NAS devices. To make the great feature of Libraries work right, these things will have to work, in my opinion.
So the answer is that the enterprise is straight outta luck for all their documents? I think this is a choice that the IT admin should be able to make.

Back to the home users (who I care about), the exciting promise of Libraries is dissapointingly deflated by not allowing us to index any folders on a NAS. Windows Media Player still does its separate thing, crawling the drive (which is the only way to get my music, vids, and pics into Libraries, though slow/crappy and it doesn't work for documents). Photo galleries also do their separate thing crawling the drive.

Please, all my stuff is on a NAS, and not everyone is going to have Windows Home Server or another actual Windows PC for their file storage. We need to have the ability to simply index networked drives and add them to our Libraries.

If that's how it should be, then you have a bug. Network locations mapped as a network drive can be used as library location. It doesn't matter if there's an index or whatever. (It's a little slow maybe...)
