If you try to add a networked location (mapped or otherwise) to a Library via Explorer, it will tell you that it cannot add the location if it's not indexed. The only way to add these unindexed locations to the Library is through Windows Media Player since it won't block you with the error, but of course this only works if you're dealing with pictures, music or video.
So it does matter if its indexed, especially since if you try to do something like Arrange by Tag for eg., it's impossibly slow and just doesn't work properly, since the folders aren't indexed.

A lot of people are having trouble with this. Some have tried the patch that let Vista index network locations, but it's not solving the problem. All we want is the opportunity to index our stuff and fulfill the promise of Libraries.
<evnet:views>0</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/453907/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>@DodoI'm not sure what comment of dahat's you're replying to, but this issue is not a bug.
