50% of C9 is Spam | The Coffeehouse

Obviously, I'm not talking historically, but in recent days that figure is accurate. Today there were 8 new posts in the C9 RSS feed. Of those, 4 were spam posts about stealing DVD content. 50% spam. That figure is WAY too high. Seriously, guys, you WILL lose readership if you can't get this under control. The tough times with trolls have nothing on this new C9 era.

Yeah when we lost the "this is spam" button I think it set the stage for this wave of junk.

I've almost ever seen any real spam on C9 in all the years I've been here. Once in a while we get these stupid DVD ripping adds but that's about it and it only lasts for a few days then it stops.

W3bbo: You can't say that definitively. Yes, I know, you can "legally" rip DVDs (legally in quotes, because it depends on local laws, and if you own the original it's still not stealing). However, ripping is often done in order to facilitate stealing. I used the harsh description here on purpose... the same as I used the 50% spam description. Neither statements are technical correct from some view point, but I'm not trying to be technically accurate. I'm trying to make a point, which would have lost some emotional meaning if I'd watered my statements down.

So, thanks for playing, but you lose.

dentaku: The DVD ripping "adds" are spam. In the recent past, they've occurred with a very high regularity. When 50% of the posts in a given day are spam, you can't say "once in a while". And today isn't an isolated occurrence. There have been several days in the last couple of months where the amount of spam has been this high. It's simply not acceptable.

It stopped because we had the spam button and the spammers gave up. Now they're seeing we don't have any defenses anymore so they came back.

50% is extremely far fetched... I try and delete these when they appear. We have to figure out a more scalable model. I will submit a feature request that we re-enable spam reporting or some other mechanism that will help you help C9.

How did you calculate this number? Did you do a survey on all forums, replies to threads, new threads? It just seems a little much to me. At any rate, thank you for keeping this issue front and center. Smiley

I agree, that's what I meant. The only REAL spam I can think of seeing on C9 in a long time are those but I've only even seen a few and they seem to go away very quickly because I'm assuming Charles or someone like that removes them.
