Trust me, I'm from the Internets
After installing Windows 7 I have to say that I like it quite a bit.  But there is unfortunately one thing that still hasn't changed since Windows XP (or maybe earlier) -- all the stupid annoying noises that Windows makes.

Start Up, Shut Down, Log On, Log Off, and on and on.  Windows 7 even adds some new ones not present is previous versions of Windows.  Yes, you can turn them off, one at a time, but you shouldn't have to.  Why does Microsoft think that users need to be assaulted with sounds at every action?  And the all-time dumbest one is still  "Start Navigation".  Seriously, why does Windows have to make a clicking sound when I select something?  Does someone at Microsoft really think that the sound my mouse button makes isn't good enough and I really need an additional click sound?  You've got to be kidding me.

Sound Scheme: No Sounds

PS: I'm not particularly a fan of the "Start Navigation" sound either and have it disabled.

I like the audible feedback when I click. Of course I know that the mouse button depressed successfully, but I like to know that the computer has responded too Smiley

I like knowing something the computer doesn't... so I prefer knowing that I clicked and the computer doesn't... makes me feel superior.
They should upgrade the sound to those Vons Casher sound. Bloop Bloop. Woo, I love those sounds, so funny.

Human after all
It's not been changed because.. its not a flaw- I also turned the navigation sound off but only because I was using a different sound theme which made the navigation sound more obvious to me (I guess the other one just burned into me and I don't even notice it).
I'm okay with all the sounds except "start navigation" too. Always turn that off on a new install, it's way too frequent.

MAC OS is much more noisy
That reminds me of back in 7th grade. The computer lab had a bunch of those PowerPC branded iMac predecessors. I don't know why, but MacOS 7 locked up for the duration of any system event sound. So, we used the recorder application to make a file with 30 seconds of dead air. Then we set it to be the default sound for everything.

Hilarity ensued.

We were then banned from using the "good" computers and were only allowed to use the IIe's on the other side of the lab. So, instead of spending the term learning how to make documents at a terminally slow pace, "Don't get ahead! Stay with the rest of the class, or you'll confuse the others!", we got to teach ourselves to program BASIC. That lasted until we figured out that most of the game disks were all written in BASIC. When students were done with their work or came in during lunch, they were greeted by modified dialog scripts or unwinnable levels.

Somehow I managed to pull an "A" in that class.

It was much worse in our class.

Some teacher thought it was good idea to hook up all the computers power supply to a couple of light switches. And back in those days programs didn't save their state every fives minutes.

So once in every hour or so, someone, I have no idea who, honoust, would bump into one of the switches.

Setting the whole class back a couple of hours.

I was allready creating intro's and cheats for games back in those days on my C64, so I didnt need those classes Smiley

And I could do sooooo much more on my macintosch classic then in that ugly WordPerfect.

think of all the visually impaired people or users with disabilities which there are quite a few of. A computer should always be as obvious to use as possible from the offset, with all the noises that you are complaining about.

Being a power user, you can change it as suggested, by going into the control panel and choosing sounds.

That's what I put in all the time Smiley
Be grateful there are no beeps when a screen is refreshed, as it always seems to be the case in the movies. Although the brain-dead Start Navigation sound comes pretty close.

Always a step ahead in stupidity.
Death to the "start" sound!
Seriously, the constant clickety-clicking is nerve racking... The first thing I do after a clean install is turn that thing off.

FEATURE REQUEST
Wouldn't it be nice if you could hold down a key during boot (e.g. "shift") to mute the volume completely? Could be a lifesaver in libraries, classes, and any other quiet place in general.

There also sound events from VS for Build Failed or Build Succeeded. So you can punish yourself by setting the Build failed to chord.wav. Smiley

I want a mouse-move sound, it should be like a discrete wind (no, not that kind of wind, although thankfully, there is no smell output device; although a smell input device coupled with a smell output device could be useful as a smell-cloaking apparatus - digital smell cancellation; but enough with the smelling).

Then when you move the mouse, it will be like a force of nature!
