Thought about that... but the time required to boot the netbook and copy 4 gigs is many many many times longer than pulling an SD card out of my pocket and plugging it in.

Granted... not a huge issue 95% of the time... however I'm specifically thinking of the time needed if one had a rapid need for more recording at say... a local town hall meeting (but then such a thing is moot of me as my congressmen appears to be such a coward that he will not make himself available to his constituents this month).

Before C# there was darkness...

I was thinking about this one.  But the new Kodak ZI8 looks impressive also.  The stereo mic input and flexable usb jack could come in handy: http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=15342&pq-locale=en_US

- $179 MSRP

- type 5 MP CMOS sensor
- 4x digital zoom
- 2.5 type LCD
- H.264 mov, AAC LC still; jpeg
- 1080p 30fps, 720/60fps, 5.3MP still
- Microphone monaural and stereo mic input jack.
- Rubber USB flip out to reduce jack strain.
- AV out, HDMI out, DC in, Mic in.
- Tripod mount

Now if MS can partner with one of these guys and get a Live Smooth steaming encoder chip on one of these...

I'm on my 2nd Flip HD. I dropped the first one in a sink full of water (but Flip was awesome enough to replace it free!) Big Smile

If you are concerned about space, carry a firewire to USB cable with you along with a female usb adapter, and upload the vids to your phones SD card Expressionless

Give the recent news that my cowardly congressmen will in fact be having a pair of town hall meetings this month I went out and picked up a Flip Ultra HD at Best Buy not an hour ago.

Verdict: Unimpressed and even let down. Aside from the fact that I think my unit may have been a stealth return (any chance your device was in its own plastic bag? Or was it just sitting in the cardboard holder?)... I quickly noticed that I've got 3 pixels which tend to favor red far too much (though only one is near constantly on).

Yea... this guy is going back tomorrow, we’ll see if an exchange unit has the same issues.

No Silver Bullet

I mount mine on my camera tripod which weighs about 5.5 pounds. It helps considerably.

EDIT: I should probably point out that I don't set the tripod on the ground, I use it as a handle with sufficient mass to smooth out motions with the Flip.

My review Italians

Such a great town hall today... and even some good video of it (including my congressmen telling a nice ole lie (or revealing his ignorance of the bill he is supporting while claiming he’s read fully... I don’t know which yet)... it went a little long so when I knew I was getting to the limit of my Flip Ultra HD I yanked out my netbook, booted it up, turned on my stand by digital camera for recording and started copying the Flip’s content to my netbook... and was horrified to realize it was going to take a full 15 minutes to finish copying.

Certainly good for normal uses... but for recording of a 2.5 hour long thing... removable memory is still ideal me thinks. Grrr.

Here’s hoping tomorrows ‘town hall’ doesn’t go longer than the built in memory can handle.

On a lighter note... while this was only the second (round trip) time I’ve gone across the Puget Sound by ferry... I really need to make sure that when I do so it’s a hot day so as to enjoy the sun deck more... not like today (cool) or when last I did it (late December).
