SOURCES: SERGEY ORDERS BING STUDY

You'd think nothing would get under the skin of search giant Google.

But co-founder Sergey Brin is so rattled by the launch of Microsoft's rival search engine that he has assembled a team of top engineers to work on urgent upgrades to his Web service, The Post has learned.

Brin, according to sources inside the tech behemoth, is himself leading the team of search-engine specialists in an effort to determine how Bing's crucial search algorithm differs from that used by the company he founded in 1998 with Stanford University classmate Larry Page.

"New search engines have come and gone in the past 10 years, but Bing seems to be of particular interest to Sergey," said one insider, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The move by Brin is unusual, as it is rare these days for the Google founders to have such hands-on involvement in day-to-day operations at the company, the source added.

A spokesman for Google declined to comment about Brin's interest in Bing but said: "We always have a team working on improving search." He added: "We dedicate more time and energy to search than anything else in our company. Our algorithm is constantly evolving."

Microsoft launched Bing two weeks ago with a massive marketing budget that sources say ranged between $80 million and $100 million.

The software company has struggled to survive in the Internet-search business, with its former MSN search engine managing to grab only 8 percent of the lucrative search market share -- far behind Google's 60 percent and Yahoo!'s 20 percent share.

In fact, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, in an effort to close the gap on Google, last year made an offer to buy Yahoo! That offer was rejected. More recently, pre-Bing, there had been talk of Microsoft being interested in some sort of deal or partnership with Yahoo! search.

Those efforts have cooled.

Bing has been warmly greeted by analysts, critics and users alike who seem to largely welcome Microsoft's new approach to the everyday business of searching the Internet. Early statistics show Bing increasing Microsoft's market share by two percentage points, to about 11 percent -- but that the gains largely didn't come from Google or Yahoo!

Microsoft prefers not to use the term "search engine," however, choosing instead to describe Bing as a "decision engine."

While Bing is presented differently from Google -- with a colorful home page and easy-to-navigate search categories compared with Google's stark white page and search box -- there is little difference between the two when it comes to searching for simple terms.

A spokeswoman for Microsoft said, however, that Bing is currently focused on improving search results in four main categories: shopping, travel, health and local searches.

Scott Kessler, senior equity research analyst at Standard & Poor's, and a Google specialist, said that Bing has a lot going for it but he does not expect it to knock Google from its No. 1 perch.

"In a recent survey we found that the predominant features that dictate how people search the Internet are ease of use and force of habit. Google has been so dominant for so long that it will be tough for anyone to take significant market share away from them."

For me to use Bing, they'd have to make a few minor changes: its search results are accurate enough, but whilst it's inorganic, I would like to see wikipedia get more promenance in results, along with other CS-related sites; maybe they could add a feature that lets you automatically bias your results towards a specific area of interest (like how you can geographically).

The one thing that pulls me to google is their extremely lightweight and simple UI; MS should hire some psychologists to devise the best UI for searching, because right now Bing is still to heavy for my tastes.

How am i supposed to code with theeeeeese ?

For me to use bing they need to offer the same service here as they do in the states.

I tried to search for a tv earlier, only to find I got kicked to ciao, so I went back to google.

For me to use Bing, they'd need to drug me, tie me to a chair, play me awful music out of jamie's music collection,  cuff my hands next to a keyboard and have me watch tv with a constant drivel of commercials inbetween shopping channels, travel shows.... it might work until I escape Tongue Out

Or they could just make the searching there more useful.

Its way to geared for the newbie, I mean the results automatically assume you've searched the wrong thing and inserts results of a term more popular. See where as Google will get you your results for what you've searched and provide you with a hint that hey look maybe you meant this search term. Bing will take your search term and because only a noob would likely be using its search engine first place... it will automatcially show results that won't have anything to do with what you'd search for.. but oh look at that little bit of text "Show just the results for "what I typed in the first place!!!"..... unless you start your search with + infront.. but hey if they didn't suck on customization and control over these issues it wouldn't be an issue.

They really should make more use of that inpage loading advanced panel!!!.. provide more options like w3bbo said biasing your results to specific areas.. making it easier. me I i'd go with biasing towards discussions boards/comments.. and making it easier to do things like date filtering etc

Anyway its good to see something has got Google worried, they've been sitting pretty for too long in the search department, and most enhancement to the results page have been through other addons etc.. where have the improvements been BIG g, other than meh favicon changes.

ps. bing image results page sucks becase of the constant scrolling, they should provide the option for letting you decide how many results per page instead.

Bing needs to aggressively improve. Not only do they need to be just as good as google, they need to continue to innovate past them. I am afraid Bing will move too slowly Sad .

I try to use Bing, occasionally I get better results with Bing, but quite often I have to keep going back to google. Before too long, google will be my first choice again.

It finds lightbulbs.

Same here. Specific searches, like when shopping for stuff, or booking tickets, et cetera are great if you're in the US. The rest of the world gets generic results that are occasionally better and occasionally worse than Google.  I could also just use Google and find what I need because I know how to use it and what to expect, so Google it is.

Whats wrong with you? You're not helping Bing by going to the competition afterwards to get those proper results! Tongue Out Someone has got to stay on bingin' ..  won't be me though.

I found a neat Bing trick (easter egg?) that somehow improves search results. Search for "google" (weird word, don't ask me what it means) and then click the first result. Now search for what you are looking for. It's a strange easter egg for sure.

PS: It was a joke, please don't hurt me. Sad

I should say why I do want to use bing.

I love the Bing image of the day. I love Bing News. Bing Maps one click directions. Bing cashback...

The search itself and unit conversions leave a lot to be desired though. I also notice google knows way too much about my browsing habbits. Suddenly ads really are targeted at what I search. Kinda weird.

Google's dominance is scary, but if they keep providing great results and nice innovative easy to use features, I think many will chose to pay a blind eye to their scaryness.

I do not see why Microsoft needs to do all these focus group studies. They could simply ask me or many niners is this good, what do we need to do, and we'd straight up tell them. There are so many things that just do not make sense to me.

Some might say that is useful.. but otherwise this can also help http://userscripts.org/scripts/review/29078 ofc there is still that ip address

..it would be funny if Bing just got its results from Google anyway Tongue Out

I also don't understand why Microsoft still hasn't hired me as CEO yet.  What's taking them so long?

I think "decision engine" is a good concept for something to strive for, but it still has a long way to go.

I don't get why people want to queue up to be nasty about Bing ... or Google, it's not like search can actually be that great anyway!

We have become overly reliant on the most convenient answer rather than the best, complete or even right answer ... as all search engine suffer from the same problem .... when you type anything into the text box it's going to start making guesses as to the context ... and from here on in it's anyones guess because it turns into a game of the law of averages which is all any algorithm is.

With this in mind, it really does makes little point in who you prefer and why you prefer them and why should you actually care? There really is more important things in life to worry about.

So you may as well use Bing because it's just as crap as Google and may as well force Google out of a position of obviously complacency back to benefiting the customer and giving us real tangable innovaton rather than resting on their lorals or waggling their d*cks in other markets.

After watching the demo I wanted to like Bing. The filters and pulled out information seemed like a nice improvement.

But unfortunately after using it for a little while you realise that they simply don't exist for 95% of searches. If you aren't an American and what you want isn't on MSN.com you just get Live Search's results. Google's raw results are better quality than Live Search's (or bing w/o the filters).

I also dislike the bloat on Bing. The full page images, custom buttons, and other junk. I like how simple google is. What I really want is Google but with those neat filters in the demo but for every single search result.

I felt the same way about the extra layout, bound to run slower until I forced myself to use it for a couple of days, and I reallly can't say it's any slower to load search results.  The first hit of the day is always slower to load the background, but that's no real problem.

The more I use it, the more I like it, but I still keep poping back to google whenever I'm in a hurry and really need answers, guess I still don't really trust it's results.

One thing that annoyed me recently about Bing is that it doesn't do conversions like 6.3 litres/100km to mpg
Google converts that for me right away.

Otherwise it seems to be pretty good. The image and video search is certainly very nice because it doesn't care what country you're in like some other features.

I like Bing's image search a lot. More results per page and when you click a result it keeps you within Bing so it is easier to contiue searching if that isn't what you're looking for.

Bing's Image search is also about IMAGES as opposed to Google's which is about sites, dimensions, and other useless information as much as it is about the images themselves. This is one of the few places on the Bing site where the filters really work well as per the demo.

I wish Bing returned Google's quality of results. The UI on image search is better, but when most of the images are junk then I still can't use it. Most of the image searches I tried on Bing gave me a fair bit of junk art like headers, and random background patterns.

Yes, conversions are a little more limited in Bing than in Google. I never figured out how to convert surfaces and volumes either (m2 and m3 to ft2 and ft3 respectively). But that takes me again in the direction of Wolfram Alpha.

Either way, Bing has the best porn video search by far. Big Smile I have being using live or bing for months, it always gets me what I wanted, so I don't see why using Google is that important.
