The beta version of Windows Security Essentials is out. The download is available from here: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=153446

I got it installed and I'm pleased to see that the application is antispyware (seems to have shutdown defender) + antivirus in one and that the updates (including the virus/spyware definitions) come via Windows Update. Nice move!

Who else is giving it a try?

Welcome Change

Not surprisingly, I am. I have it running on my new laptop. Seems to be working well.

Hey LG, is this the replacement for OneCare?

looking for info on that... checking link...

I'll be trying it out later this evening...  I was pretty impressed with OneCare (although it has some bad habits that make it inappropriate for a portable computer) and WSE looks pretty promising.

Yes, it is the replacement for OneCare (or rather, the replacement for OneCare's antivirus and antispyware functionality:  MSE will not include OneCare's firewall or backup utility).

Microsoft Security Essentials is the same program as has been mentioned here before under the name Morro.

Installing this now, and it's just killed defender. I hope it deals with all the OS nags about not being defended etc.

It also says it is an "update" as opposed to an entirely new program. We shall see...

does it remove/replace onecare if onecare is installed?

Installing now...

Funny it downloaded using "Microsoft File Transfer Managaer", that seems like a good download manager for IE9 !!

Welcome Change

The Morro test people got back to me. It's a known issue that they are currently fixing.

Proving QQ for 5 years!

Kind of a kick in the butt to the people still paying for OneCare.

First impressions? The interface is nice but it froze when it updated its self. We will see how it goes.

So, security ESSENTIALS is an optional download for windows? naming is kinda weird in that regard.

Okay, maybe it needs an update. But it's nice te know they have code to mannage downloads. They should really bould it into IE9

*grumble* doesn't install to server SKUs... must find person to beat over the head with a Windows Home Server *grumble*

In the mean time though... we can always vote for it as a suggestion.

The page's link doesn't work. And the connect.microsoft.com wasn't responding. I get it from beta.microsoft.com main page's ad. So far no virus detected using Quick Scan. My PC is pretty clean. Smiley

32 bit supports XP, Vista and Win7. 64bit supports Vista and Win7.

Poor XP 64 bit, unloved by its parents.

All 10 of the people running XP x64 must be devastated. Wink

Have been running it for almost a day on my old XP laptop and on a 64 bit Vista machine. This is exactly what I was looking for: simple and minimalist. It takes so little resources while doing a scan that the ancient Celeron processor was still usable for surfing the internet. So far one of the best antivirus I have ever tested.

My name has 9 letters. Coincidence? I think not...

So, security ESSENTIALS is an optional download for windows? naming is kinda weird in that regard.

Windows Live Essentials is also an optional download, so at least they're consistently weird. Smiley
