The price is rather pointless to complain. OEM version cost almost the same, only like 30 bucks difference. I personlly would go Home or Pro. Ultimate this time around is indeed for ultimate users, not me. It is not like I have to get Ultimate to get both Home and Business features back in the Vista days. The pro already has noth Home and Business features. Ultimate is just having some features that I really don't need. I am not boycott is, but simply I am not foreced to buy, which I am glad MS made this decision on Win7.

Since Home also has partition backup, I will only go for Pro for XP mode.

I think Microsoft Marketing has to REALLY stress this, there is so much confusen about "upgrade cd-rom" and "clean install"

And of course there's no discount on the ultimate upgrade. Even for Vista Ultimate users.

fknight, you can buy the Win7 Professional upgrade disc, but you'll need to do a full install (which will more your Windows, Program Files, and Users folders into a "Windows.old" directory).

Jamie - OS X costs more than Win7. OS X costs $129 or more for the upgrade version from Tiger. Win7 costs $119 for the upgrade from XP or Vista.

Yes, Snow Leopard is cheaper, but it's been less than two years since Leopard came out, and it's basically a gloified service pack (basically of the features it ships were included in XP SP2 / Server 2003). So they're basically doing the same thing MS did when they sold Windows 98 SE for $20 to Windows 98 users.

Professional is an even better deal compared to Apple, because they charge $399 for Apple Remote Deskop (which includes the RDP + Group Policy equivalents).

I bought Vista Ultimate because I needed to be able to RDP into my machine (please, step off with the "just use VNC")

Now, granted it's only a $20 difference between the Windows 7 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade pricing, but now that Windows 7 Pro has remote desktop and I don't need Ultimate -- does anyone know if Windows Vista Ultimate --> Windows 7 Professional is a supported upgrade path or will I need to do a full install? If the latter, I'd rather just pay the extra $20 and get Ultimate, as reconfiguring/reinstalling everything ain't worth $20 in savings.

I am confused. Doesn't Vista Business /Win7 Pro support multi-language packs? (Not GUI, just language support)

Home Premium appears to be all you need then, it has IIS and Media Centre.

And indeed I did get it with a shiny new computer -- I think it was an extra £50 for Ultimate over Pro.

Win7 might be a different story, though -- I won't be buying a new PC as the current one is still perfectly good. The pricing of Win7 Ultimate will become more of a consideration -- but only if it's still the only way to get Media Centre and IIS.

There is a nice serendipity in the fact that by the time I can afford a new netbook, Win7 will be available (that's me trying to look on the bright side of my current finances ;) ).

so you wanted to do web work - and watch tv - so you had to pay (cdn 499) for ultimate

(not that you did but still...)

**edit - i keep "reading" about these deals and price cuts - and all the other sales guy things that UNDERMINE your brand - but still when i go to staples - Vista is 499 - ask an assistant (to hold you when you faint)

its old news to ask "where's 99 dollar windows" but thats what was announced (pre-order) - Why not just make that the PRICE?

talk about a new lease on 10 year lock in - 2 years - normal pricing.

It's not really irony, it's just business. Where Apple needs to commoditise software because they're a hardware company, Microsoft needs to commoditise hardware because they're a software company.

And Sun decided to commoditise hardware (by inventing Java which made it irrelevant which kind of hardware you used) despite the fact that they're a hardware company. :)

I bought Vista Ultimate because it was on the only way to get Media Centre and IIS together (I want to watch TV and play with website development, just not at the same time). Extras were never part of the equation for me.

The irony is that Apple want to commoditise the software while Microsoft became as large as it did because it convinced IBM to commoditise the hardware (Gates encouraged IBM to make the original PCs out of off-the-shelf hardware, thereby allowing other PC manufacturers to come into existance, all selling DOS).
