Asteroids: coming to a screen near you

Following a four-studio bidding war(!), Universal has picked up the film rights to the arcade classic, Asteroids.

I'm not holding out hope for a particularly rivetting plot.

It'll probably be some biographical about a space pilot who'se job is to clear some region of space, I'm curious how'd they'd pad the story out though. I wouldn't doubt the film ends with him dying.

Or it could be like Wargames was to Missile Command, where the movie isn't set in the game, but revolves around it someday. I've got a penchant for 1980s things, so it'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Of course, having the rights to a franchise doesn't mean the film will necessarily be made; in 2003 there was a ruckus over the rights to a MechWarrior film, but that never materialised, and MW's BattleTech universe is deep with a rich history (certainly comparable to Asimov's Foundation in several ways).
