My name has 9 letters. Coincidence? I think not...

Time for something completely off topic. You may know what "Let's Play" videos are. They're videos on YouTube where somebody plays an entire game, often providing commentary while doing it. Many of these are funny and/or interesting, though some of them are boring depending on the game and the person providing the commentary. Smiley

I quite enjoy watching these, when done well, and I figured I could jump onto this bandwagon and make a Let's Play of my own. The game I chose for this endeavour is Riven: The Sequel to Myst. This is one of my favourite games, with an atmosphere and depth that has been unmatched by anything produced before or since.

So I've begun uploading videos for this Let's Play, and currently have the first six available on YouTube. I intend to continue adding two a day; in total it will be thirty videos to play the game start to finish. While playing, I provide commentary on the puzzles, the story, and the locations. So yeah, it's probably pretty boring, but anyway. Tongue Out

This is the first part:

Note there is some slight audio distortion in my narration, especially in the beginning; this doesn't happen in any of the other parts though.

The remaining videos can be found in this playlist. I will add new videos to that playlist as well as I upload them.

Enjoy! Big Smile

(Note: it wasn't originally my intention to post about this on C9, since it's wildly off topic, but Littleguru liked the videos and insisted I do so anyway Wink )

In the words of the flying welshman: "Sure mist is pretty, but egad is it dull." Tongue Out

I don't know, I never liked Myst. I thought the whole 90 degree movement thing was antiquated when it came out, and I couldn't make much of the story apart from two guys blathering on about red and blue books. Also, it was advertised to me as an adventure game, which I expect to be point & click style games, when it was more like a puzzle game like The 7th Guest. So I never bothered to try the sequels.

Still, I'm kind of interested in seeing what everybody loves about it so badly, so I guess I'm going to follow this to see what all the buzz was about. Tongue Out

Now I'm going to have to go home and play Myst this evening (I have the original CD version at home...  I wonder how well it runs on WinXP?)

I guess my main beef with the slideshow movement thing is that it's so disorienting. The 7th Guest, which came out around that time too, as far as I know, also had very limited movement (and was also pre-rendered), but when you, for instance, climbed a staircase, the camera would glide up the staircase rather than jump to the next scene, giving you some sort of reference and at least letting you know how far up the staircase you went.

I recently played The Last Express, which is probably one of the best games I've ever played, but it too had a mode of movement like that and it was incredibly disorienting, despite taking place in a train so you could really only move down a long corridor. It was really the only big drawback I could find, which is a shame.

Weird: The Last Express from 1997, installed and ran just fine on Vista, while Fahrenheit, which is scarcely four years old, wouldn't even install.

"Keep it secret. Keep it safe!" Spot on with the intonation there. Tongue Out

These are awesome. These Let's Play videos are a great way to catch up on classics you never had the time or interest to play, and I actually got pretty intrigued already by the first one. Nice job.

Thanks for the regular updates, Sven. I spent, literally, all day today watching Let's Play on Youtube.. I rewatched all of yours, then saw 15 parts of realMYST, then 31 parts of Elder Scrolls: Oblivion!

things go on as always

Tales of Monkey Island Part 1 is out, anybody buy that?

According to Telltale, they didn't do point & click because they wanted to be able to use camera angles where you can't see the floor, and hence have nothing to click on. I really had to get used to only using the mouse to interact with stuff and using WASD to walk, though. I kept clicking the ground and wondering why Guybrush wasn't moving.

I'm a total Monkey Island fanboy and I enjoyed it. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than Escape from Monkey Island, and there's some genuinely funny stuff in there.

Also, Dominic Armato is a genious.

I enjoyed them very much, thanks Sven. I also saw (from different uploaders, though) a lets play of realMyst.. and now am hunting for Let's Play of the later Myst games with decent commentary (there are walkthroughs on youtube, but mostly silent).

I think I can safely blame you for hooking me on to this genre of games. Smiley

I never played any Myth games but I'm enjoying it as a kind of interesting story telling exprience. The LORE is fairly deep.

PS - How do you watch it in playlist with full-screen as an option? Seems to make me pick between full screen OR playlist... Sad
