Live for nothing, or die for everything

So the girlfriend and I want to vacation in about a year, and we want to go somewhere green and overseas, her being of Mexican heritage doesn't qualify, so we want to see about my side of the family.....Ireland.

I know a few of the people here are from that side of the pond and just wondering, where can I vacation to that I don't get blown up, and preferably where it's not city, we can just take the kids out to the beach, enjoy no technology for a week or so and then join the real world...

Oh, and how to get there from Tucson, AZ would be great Tongue Out

If you're in the South of Ireland, you're going to be fine.  Personally, my wife and I spent a very pleasant week driving from Gallway, right round the South coats of Ireland and up to Dublin.  Very quiet. Nice empty beaches. Lots of roads, no road signs.

We just stayed in Bed & Breakfast accomodation (turn up un-announced and hope there is space).

This was a bout 10 years ago, before the current outbreaks of peace on the border.

If you think that you're going to get blown up in Ireland I'd suggest you keep that thought and any of the other sterotypes to yourself otherwise at best you'll get laughed at.

Ditto Galway - and the Burren, the Cliffs of Moher are stunning. Oh and Fungie the Dolphin in Dingle.

I'm biased, but I'd suggest heading up north too, to The Giants Causeway. Lots of nice beaches around there too, and there's also the Glens of Antrim, and Glenco.

Most US flights land in Dublin, but you may find it cheapter to fly to the UK, then over to Belfast or Dublin. Heck just fly, get a car, get onto the coast and pick a direction. It'll all be good.

Why yes Ireland is the same as Italy. If you just use the first letter.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the blown up comment.

Ireland is a very beautiful country, but unfortunately the public transport is pretty awful, so if you want to see what it has to offer, you are probably going to need to hire a car.

If you hire a car, thankfully the country is small so you will be able to see lots of different places. If you would like to stay in one place, then Galway is very nice with a good mix of nightlife in a very small city, with nearby beaches and countryside to go and explore. If you really want to get cut off the grid and sit on becahes, then maybe Achill Island in Mayo (Photo) is pretty nice. It is quite isolated but is a short-ish drive to Cliffs of Moher and things like that. Good weather will make an excellent time in Achill.

Also, I love Donegal in the North West, but that is prob because it is reasonably close to where I live and we go there a lot.

EDIT: An seriously, the North is nice now. You should check it out, maybe ot Belfast because it is like pretty much any other city in the world, but like Blowdart suggestions, the Giant's Causeway and the Glens of Antrim are worth a look-see.
