My name has 9 letters. Coincidence? I think not...

My external hard disk fell over just now (literally), and it appears it didn't take it well. It started making some weird noises and now it won't start anymore (it just makes weird noises and doesn't get picked up by Windows).

That sucks, especially since I can't really afford to replace it right now. Hopefully they'll replace it under warranty.

There was nothing truly irreplacable on the disk, just a lot of ISOs from MSDN and things of that nature. All in all a few 100GB I'll have to get back somehow. And I just lost one my backups, so if my main hard disk fails now I'm in deep *.

I am not happy. Sad

if it is western digital just go to the webpage and input your serial number. i have replaced my book drive already with them. if you didnt register your drive with them they calculate the replacement by when the drive was made.

WOOH! WOOH!

I've been looking into a homeserver machine lately... everytime I hear about somebody's HDD going kapoot... it makes me want to get it more

IFYP - I just had my new 1.5 TB USB disk die on me and that was just a few weeks after hearing the same story from an aquaintance. So now I'm done with that medium. New NAS arrived today, ready with 2 disks for mirroring.

my homeserver is bugging me about getting another drive because the system is running low on space. if your install has all good drives a failed drive is no problem. if you have a drive acting strange, the replication dosnt work and you may lose data. i got a keepvault account to back it up till they changed from unlimited to a per gig system.

Are you looking to build your own homeserver? of buy Windows Home Server?

WOOH! WOOH!

I saw the Acer homeserver box w/ 1TB HDD for $350... with room for 3 more drives... Looks very attractive... I'm liking WHS from what I'm seeing. My hand-built desktop memory just died recently... And I had it opened up... next to my mac mini...

It's quite a site... I'd say 16 mac minis can fit into my tower... and I can't say I feel significant speed from my tower...

I'm looking to scale out... instead of up these days.

Argh Expressionless . Broken hard disks and broken monitor on laptop are really nasty stuff ...

I just bought Deltaco + Western Digital Caviar Blue 640G and I'm using it as my main hard disk at the moment (Fedora rawhide). I counted if it last at least 3 years and I'm happy.

Well that's only if you have two drives.

You know you can plug an external drive in now and simply backup the shares to it? It's manual though

the 4TB drives are to expencive. all i can do for now is just make sure replication is running.

things go on as always

Seagate has a data recovery service where you mail in your drive to them and aren't charged anything if they can't recover the data for you. I believe the service is open to drives of any manufacturer, but if you own a Seagate drive under warranty, they'll also replace your drive regardless of whether they can recover anything.
