As for the breadcrumb bar... if people don't think that's one of the most misguided and badly thought-out UI components ever then I don't want them designing anything I have to use. It's like something you'd find on Linux.

Curiously enough, you'll find a breadcrumb bar in both Gnome and KDE, and in the Finder in Mac OS X.

Actually, the Up button is like something you'd find on Linux.

Gnome has one, and KDE probably does (but I don't think it's in its default set).  They're both copying what Windows Explorer has done since Windows 95, though.

(Gnome's file browser Nautilus is actually notable in that it includes a true spatial mode, similar to the Finder in Mac OS 9 and earlier.  It's actually a pretty interesting solution to the up button "problem", if you believe that it's a problem.)

"Spatial" filesystem explorers dropped out of fashion after Windows 95 spammed your desktop with multitudes of windows, often for folders you're no longer interested in.

Can we all agree on one thing? That Microsoft doesn't consider the hollistic overall design of their user experiences as important as Apple does, and going by the track record from 2K to XP to Vi to W7 means there's little chance of that change happening any time soon.

You  have the UI installed on your domain controller? How terribly quaint. Server Core FTW.

What change exactly are we talking about?

Question for those who can get me an answer: Was MSR involved at all during the development of Vista's UI?

It's not on by default, but there's an option to turn on a breadcrumb bar at the bottom of the window (View->Show Path Bar):

That's pretty entertaining, but I use the breadcrumb all the time and am happy with it. Its a lot quicker to use than the folder tree. My only wish is being able to drag and drop to the breadcrumb bar.

That made me laugh, thanks. Smiley Even though I disagree about breadcrumbs being bad. I quite like them but I can understand that they're not for everyone.

I use the up button and breadcrumbs, depending on what I'm doing, and almost never use the folder tree. I use a file manager which lets me configure whether or not I use those three things individually and also lets me configure the Backspace key to both behave consistently and to do what I've been used to it doing for a decade.

That idea appeals to me. It should react to interaction the same as the treeview. It would be nice to get context menu's for it as well.

By drag & drop do mean drag things onto the breadcrumb components to copy/move files to parent folders, or drag folders on to the bar to navigate to the dragged folder?

(FWIW Opus does the former but not the latter. It also does kettch's suggestion of context menus for the components. Not sure what other file managers do.)

I gotta say, I'm glad there are other people out there who dislike some of these changes. I've been using Vista since it launched and now 7. To say that people are "afraid of change" is really missing the point. During the time I've used this new mutated version of Explorer I have adjusted to some of the changes - I even like some of them. But other changes are just rubbish. To me, the issue here isn't that they changed but that they didn't give us any options to go back. My biggest issue - the ever changing "auto sensing" folder views. It has really had a negative impact on my ability to "get the job done," as it were.

Everybody is different. Apparently MS thinks it knows best. Think of it like shoes. They're only making their latest shoe styles in sizes 8-12. Got big feet? Small feet? Too bad, you need to "adapt" and make your feet fit OUR shoes. Now, is that really fair? What ever happened to "Windows My Way" - that slogan is for all purposes a flat out lie by these standards.

Now, here's the really painfull part - those of us who feel MS has crippled Explorer and file management in general will never be heard. My guess is the shell team has just as narrow a view as the folks who tell us to "learn, adjust." We're not the target market. Still, I'd give my full support to anybody trying to make somebody at MS actually listen...
