My name is Dave Oliver. I'm a Technical Architect.

Well I'm just back from my holiday's down in (almost) sunny and beautiful Cornwall, UK.

The high point was Adrenalin Quarry and the 490m zip-line over a lake. I very much enjoyed that!

So what have you been up to on your holidays, apart from the obvious?

  • Released xpize 5
  • ...and Vize 2
  • Completed my first year as an undergraduate (with a 1:1 average module mark so far)
  • Bought another company outright
  • Tested Widnows 7, thought "meh" and planning to stick on XPx64 for the meanwhile
  • and some other stuff

Worked? Smiley

My wife and I went up to NYC for a long weekend but that's all the traveling we did this year. Have to pay for the new kitchen first!

Pray do tell on the company...

And how did you buy a company flat out? Do you even own a for profit business?

I've invested my student loan, I didn't spend it on booze and partying Smiley

It's making a profit of a few hundred bob a month, I hope to expand it.

Worked, worked ..... oh and when my wife and son went to Denmark and Sweden, I worked some more ...

But it worked out, we landed a new client for ODIN, the tour operator software we are developing Smiley

"if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Whilst Windows 7 is an improvement on Vista, I still have no compelling reason to upgrade.

... Doing what? Tongue Out

PS - Does it make more than putting your entire student loan into an 3 yr ISA and paying off entirely at the end of your degree?

Significantly more. Assuming things go to plan this acquisition will enable me to pay off my student loans whilst still being a student.

Hmmm... horses weren't "broken" and still we switched to cars. Sure, cars were more comfortable, although I wouldn't say that they were for quite a while, but still. 7 is also way more comfortable than XP. It starts already with the install experience.

Oh.. and yeah: I started to work at MSFT Smiley Sweet!

I'm white because I smelt an onion

I worked in a genomics lab, building a system to store genetic information and to (in the future) integrate data from gene experiments.

I also entered into the Will Code For Green Bing contest.

In my free time, I worked on a radio station platform (for high schools) that doesn't require an expensive media server.

Started a new software project. Went to DC.

Got a job after 9 months of almost zero income. Scared It's nice to be able to go to dinner and a movie without digging change out of the couch and doing a financial analysis and projection.

Work, work work, sleep, work, work, drank, work, work, saw a couple horrible movies, work, work, plotted evil, work work, C9, work work.

Come November or December though... then fun will be had as I find a tastey deer or two and put them in my freezer (whether they want to be there or not).

Started the summer off by getting married and honeymooning in Barbados, worked alot, went to Bangkok for more work, went to Belgium and France to play some golf, worked some more, played some more golf, had a few BBQ's and now the football season has started I'll be at Millwall most weekends much to the disgust of the wife lol

Which, I guess, is a bad time for me to point out I worked most of the summer too, migrating our desktop image over from Windows XP to Vista x64. Of course, work hard and play hard is always a good motto, so I managed to squeeze a few new things in too, including going to Go Ape the other day. I'm still terrified of heights, but it was all good fun nonetheless.

And somewhere in amongst all that I got a new job, although it doesn't start till mid November, giving me a little time to realise quite what I've let myself in for!
