things go on as always

Google wants people to use their OS and their productivity suite (Google Apps). They're trying to replace Microsoft, just like Sun/Oracle/Netscape wanted to. That's why Microsoft considers them a threat.

The web services business is a pick up game. Strategy rarely works when the latest trend is unpredictable.

Google is just like any other company, except their employees are more brilliant.

I don't see what the point of listing what each company wants to own.

Google often times holds hackathons and other events just to get a feeling of what people are using their technologies for. Or what they could use them for. They're extremely smart.

I've never actively seen Microsoft invite developers to the campus and see what they are using Visual Studio for.

I don't even think they care.

An example of this was popfly. Had they asked at least 5 real developers if they were actually going to use it in their real world app, they would have never released it. They're in their little ivory tower, and they're shut off from the world.

That's why their web services business is starting to lose money.

No I think Google pretty much sticks to their mission. Most of their products tie into it. Some don't, but most do. You can even tie the "evil" things Google does to that mission statement. Of course in the end of the day it's all about the Benjamins baby.

Are you kidding?  MS has developer camps all the time.  They reach out all the time.  You can see that here all the time with "feed back wanted" posts, etc.  Normally, most people don't have the time to do all the betas and feedback, and those are normally the people that complain AFAICT.  As far as popfly, I am guessing that whole thing was test case for azure backend to get some low profile real traffic - could be wrong.

Microsoft just wants to own your entire electronic experience - Be it computers, mobile devices, consoles, etc. Sometimes even in your car.  That's why they're great at them.

Strangely, they also seem to want to own your media experience. So why do they suck so bad at it?

Er ... I know developers who have been invited to MS sites to play with stuff. Did you just make that bit up?

You're way off base here.  Microsoft meets with their partners and MVP's all the time to talk about Microsoft products and technologies. Microsoft branch offices constantly hold and sponsor local get-togethers, user groups, etc.  If they aren't in your area, call up Redmond and complain, and they'll light a fire under the folks at your regional office to make things happen.

My name is Dave Oliver. I'm a Technical Architect.

Francis Bacon was quoted as saying 'For also Knowledge itself is power'.

Google and Microsoft fully understand what this means and are going to try and find more ways to gather it and use it once they have it.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing as understanding a customer better means that you will be able to build better products to meet their needs.

Processing large amounts of data on people also allows us to spot trends and patterns that help us to improve health care, energy consumption, environment, communication and education. If used properly can get us to really understand ourselves.

Noticed the 'used properly' it's easy to abuse it to influence power and control and this is why knowledge workers such as ourselves need to stay vigilant and highlight abuses that we find ... because who else is? The traditional protection authorities are not up to speed, this is why we have to assist them in adapting to the new world.
