EDIT: To answer OP - wear tricorn hat, preferably something jack sparrow could wear - that way you will look less like a dork and more like a weirdo.. I always wanted that hat..

I've never done any serious street photography. From doing some reading on the subject, you basically need to be extremely confident in what you are doing. If you are furtive and timid, you end up looking like a perv.

Beyond your own issues, the next hurdle is to not get arrested for doing something that is entirely legal and the source of a lot of great art.

I need to invest in better glass for my camera, I get really bad chromatic abberation at times, which really ruins my shots.

Yes, but for best results and added impact you might want to do it from the top of some stepladders (helps with perspective distortions .. seriously ..
