Ron Gilbert, who created the original Monkey Island games is releasing a new game, DeathSpank:

Its an over-the-top parody of games like Diablo. Diablo is becoming sillier and sillier with each new release anyway, to the point that Diablo 3 seems like a self-parody. You just roam around masses of monsters and smash them in 12 different ways to watch gore and blood spill out.

I like the look of this, it is kind of adult swim-ish. It's rather crazy to think of these giant worlds are dynamically loaded, that is to say that you do not see any load screens once the game is loaded. Hopefully it will be as fun to play as the video suggests. The last game that I was excited about was Spore (before it was released), and we all know what happened to that. However, MonkeyIsland is being re-released and I will purchase that, once it comes out. Hopefully, DeathSpank will hit its 2010 release time-frame.

I never played Spore, did it turn out to be bad? I was always skeptical of it, because I saw it the same way I see The Sims, that its a fun concept that would get boring really fast.

Spore was so overhyped that it had no choice but to fall short of being what they claimed. It was fun though.

DeathSpank looks fun! I'd definitely give it a try when it comes out.

It's already out.

Ron Gilbert is great, I can't wait to give this a shot. He's one of the few people who can do actual, consistent comedy in games.

Ron Gilbert gave the PAX keynote this past weekend, he was awesome. He's definitely transitioned from the big budget studios to a a real indie vibe for his games and I think it works well with his sense of humor.
