I'm covering the Halo 3 ODST launch party next Monday night and I will have the opportunity to sit down with the developers behind the game.  I'm looking for questions you would like answered.  If you were going to sit down and chat with the developers behind ODST, what would you ask them?  Thanks,

Do they plan to release ODST on the PC?

Were improvements made to the Halo 3 engine? Does the game run in true HD, or is it 640p like Halo 3?

Why should one spend 60 dollars on a game that is similar to Halo 3? Where is the value? Try to sell it. "We did ________ and it makes for a much better experience ...etc".

That's not really a question for developers...

How long did it take to get the game from draft to retail, how many sleepless nights were involved and most importantly, how many pizzas did it take to keep the developers and designers alive while working. Tongue Out

What now that they're not doing Halo after ODST anymore?

It finds lightbulbs.

Don't they get tired of doing Halo games all the time? Would they like to move on to some other IP?

Why do ODST seem to be able to kick ass like spartans do? i.e. completely undermining the whole halo series where we're 'born and raised' to believe we're part of an elite team of oobars, and that we are the oobar of the oobars..

ODST is their last scheduled Halo project... after the split w/ MS...

No kidding? Well, that answers that question.

What new rendering technologies are in this release?

Actually, that's Halo: Reach Smiley

Sure it is. Shouldn't the game be their pride and joy? I would hope they put something in there that they absolutely love.

I would rather hear it from the devs than the marketing people...

Are there any areas that they think they could improve upon if they had more time? Were they able to extract more out of the machine (360) than when doing Halo 3 and is there room for more improvements going forward?

  • Since Microsoft absorbed Bungie, did the corporate culture amongst Bungie's development team change any?
  • What about after Bungie was spun-off?
  • There was outrage over Halo 2 PC's Vista-only requirements since it was arbitrary and not backed up by any technical requirements (besides the autorun program using mshtml and PNG images, requiring IE7 or later). If you make a PC port of ODST will there be anything similar?
  • Do you sometimes believe you've died and gone to hell, tasked with making endless Halo games for all eternity?
  • You may have seen that Gamasutra article a few weeks ago about huge hacks put into games to make the scheduled release date. Are there any dirty little secrets of your own you'd like to share with us?

Ok, question #1: do you need someone to carry your bags to that party? wipe your brow, hold mic cables out of the way for safety?

Question #2: (and I think this ends up being more of a game designer question but I'm going for it anyway) How do the changes around shields, health regeneration and the addition of health packs change the mechanics of the game?

Question #3: Ok ... who is the big fan of Firefly over there? (I counted three characters in the last trailer...) I'm a fan myself Smiley

Question #4: Somewhat related to #1, do you find that people who are very used to Halo 1,2,3 tend to run into firefights and get shot up assuming they have shields?

I'll stop there, but I'm interested in the answers to some of the other questions as well (changes to the engine, rendering, etc..)

I'm pretty sure that ODSTs are going to have limitations compared to a Spartan ... that is one of the things that make this much more than just another Halo campaign to me ... I'd like to think that you can't do things like flip a warthog with your hands ... but I guess we'll see.

Not that they wouldn't have an opinion, but Bungie didn't make the PC port of Halo 2 ... just fyi

Seems that is pretty normal for movies, I wonder if games fall more into that type of model where they have a target date to be 'in market' and it isn't really tied to the completion of the code (although it needs to be *after* the code is done I'd guess Smiley )

"Why should one spend 60 dollars on a game that is similar to Snooze-fest 1,2 and Bore 1,2,3...? Where is the value?"

A: The value is in the pockets of the people who never played these sort of games before. The people who have played them are in the minority and it makes no economic sense to make games for the minority.

Note: I'm not saying that FPS by definition are all boring. Examples of great FPS experiences at the time of release: D 1&2, U 1 level 1, C (parts of). The problem with Snooze-fests and Bores are mainly that they did not have any levels/map/anything that excited me in any way. There's still room for a satisfying FPS but since doing one appears to be extremely difficult given this short list, I'd rather play something with enough of a fresh take such as ME/SS's more novel combat paired with the story that engaged player more actively. ME had quite a few boring hours but overall there was enough to differentiate it from the generic FPS that I'd still classify it as a great game instead of merely average like Snoofe-Fests and Bores.

I think my ideal "FPS" would actually be something like making AW (aka OOTW) today in AC style but in AW setting and putting in the ME combat style. But then again that would be more of a sci-fi action-adventure with ways to either shoot or otherwise accomplish the goal. So not really a pure FPS. But definitely not an "F" either. I don't care about micromanaging assets/stats/team.

Yea yea I heard this on the 20 minute trailer they did showing how health works differently, but how ODST get 'special visors', why don't spartans? and videos shown months before this were showing ODST guys wasting elites like they were nothing.. uh might as well sit back spartans- looks like you aren't that great after all.

Tell me something you haven't yet told anyone else yet about this game, something cool?

At the time of Halo 3 aren't you the last Spartan left alive? So it doesn't make much sense, whereas ODST has many people in it.
