If you haven't yet installed the new Zune 4.0 client and/or 3.2 firmware for pre-HD devices, you might want to hold off on both. A number of people over on the Zune community forums are finding their Zune's bricked after installing one or both of these updates. For me it was just the Zune 4.0 client. My Zune is dead. Until I hear of an official free of charge fix, it will remain a paperweight. I've switched to my iPhone until then. Doesn't do everything the way I'd like but it's working out OK.

Working as intended.

Get an iPod.

The Zune 4.0 client worked perfectly on my four machines. The 3.2 (35) firmware works fine on my Zune 80.

My iPods are rightfully collecting dust.

He said he switched to his iPhone, not an iPod.

iPhones can be boring compared to Android phones, but you can QuickPWN them and use them as SSH file servers with an SCP or tunneling client.

Cydia has some useful software for iPhones.

Zune, what's the point? Phones are more than capable media players now. There is no more need for an iPod clone. Microsoft was too little too late on that one. Azure was wayyyyy too late following EC2 and S3, and Appspot.com

I've never seen Microsoft more behind the times than they are now. A few months was the max in the past. Now they are lagging years behind. I think the trend started with Soapbox which was about a year or 2 too late, and now they are even more behind the curve with recent technology.

This is exactly what happened to Borland. No longer listed on NASDAQ. Microsoft is falling deeper in the hole of no return.

If by boring you mean "you don't have to hack it so it does what you purchased it to do" then I'd agree....

Mine updated fine, but the Zune software hung on the 'updating the device' stage. After a couple of hours, I just disconnected it (given that the menu on the device itself seemed fine and indicated it was running the latest firmware). Seems ok now.

Have you tried the old 'leave it powered on and locked till the battery completely dies' then powering it back up again.

It's a bug in the firmware (any version), that can cause an infinite loop on device boot. You need to drain the battery and then attempt a device restore. The problem just is, that draining takes months. RMA the device.

DC, I am sure you have tried this, but let me throw this in, before you throw it out.

Zunes, will sometimes appear to be bricked if the power has drained too low on the device.  Before tossing it, plug it into a power source for a few hours and let it charge.  I would actually avoid the dock, and go straight in from the USB cable instead.

As far as firmware updates, I have upgraded my 120 and 8, but have yet to upgrade my 30 or 80.  I have had no problems yet.

There have been reports of firmware loading and locking up, but usually a reboot of the device clears it up.

I have not heard widespread reports of bricked Zunes, with this firmware, but I don't discount your experience.

Good Luck.

Usually when you go to sync, it will explicitly ask to install firmware, and will also alert you that the firmware on your device is out of date.

Unless you clicked quickly, it should have not installed the new firmware.
