Horses for courses

When I logged in to Amazon this morning, the usual list of recommended books was replaced by a large advert for the Kindle now vailable in the UK (and other countries).

Anyone tempted?

I would be if I lived somewhere with decent mobile phone coverage, and if I had the money spare to buy a Kindle in the first place.

If only they are in color. Seriously no Color e-Paper Photo Frame? I only want that.

It finds lightbulbs.

I can't find a list of what those other countries are anywhere. Anyway, I'll be tempted when it's €100 or so. And even then, only if they're seriously upping the ante on newspaper and magazine subscriptions. I still like to show off with books on my shelf too much.

Yep I'm ordering one, I love my Sony reader and I'm waiting to check out a Kindle to see if it's better.  Whichever one is worse is going to the wife Smiley

EDIT: Ordered, roll on the 19th

I like the idea of it. But it's tied too tightly to all of Amazon's infrastructure for my liking. If I'm going to pay the same money as I would for a paper copy of a book, I at least want a PDF as well as the Kindle copy so if my Kindle breaks and I decide I don't want to buy another, I can still read them.

Proving QQ for 5 years!

I don't "get it." What is the appeal?

You can't browse the internet and have to buy digital books that cost as much as paper versions of the same. If you're going to spend that kind of cash get an iPod Touch with the Wikipedia application or something. I'll give it a prod if I see one in a shop or if someone I know buys one but other than that I wouldn't even consider it.

I'm sure there are cheaper e-paper readers you can get if you're not interested in the amazon bookstore service.

Believe me i love my Sony reader and it's a pleasure to read on definately one of the decent purchases Ive made.  opeing the Kindle is even better, have my reservations though, spose i'll see on the 19th.

So much easier to carry around loads of books and take on holiday etc, light, portable and the battery life is exceptional.

If you like reading, why wouldn't you get one, Kindle or otherwise? (obviously there is the price factor like anything)

Why would I? I only read one book at a time, and even when going on holiday taking a bunch of books isn't that much of a hassle.

My name has 9 letters. Coincidence? I think not...

I mostly read in the train, on my PocketPC (five year old Axim still beats the iPhone when it comes to text quality). Taking my PocketPC with me tends to be less hassle than taking even one book (especially if it's a big book). I normally only have a laptop bag with me and books don't fit in there very well, and I can have a book with me even when I don't have a bag with me at all.

Last year's holiday, I ran out of books to read, so I bought a new one using the hotel's Internet connection and started reading it five minutes later, something you can't do with paper books (especially not in Japan where finding stores that sell English books is very hard). I also don't need any shelf space (which, living in Japan, I have very little of).

Those are the reasons I prefer eBooks. As always, however, ymmv.

That really depends on how much you read when you're on holiday. And if you're one of those bods who likes to take study for his IT exams while on holiday, well, that's half your luggage allowance gone right there.

...

I would be tempted as it sounds like a good reading experience and practical to carry around, but I don't think I will get one until I am sure the books I buy can be read on other devices and eventually on my computer.

That is pretty much the same reason why I still buy CDs when unprotected music is not available online.

Oh yes, toush screen would be more tempting.
