I CAN has cheezburger and you CAN'T has stop me!

INDECT is "

an EU-funded intelligence gathering system ("INDECT work package 4") designed to comb webblogs, chat sites, newsreports, and social-networking sites to inorder to build up automatic dossiers on individuals, organizations and their relationships.

Now I don't have a problem with the security services using social networking etc. but this raises two main problems for me.

There is absolutely NO reason whatsoever for crawling social networks and building up automated dosiers. I don't trust the automation and I don't trust the security services with the information. We are still "innocent until proven guilty" are we not, technicaly even if not pragmaticaly. Forget police DNA databases etc., this could be even more invasive and all seeing.

Secondly I'd be concerend if inteligence services begin to rely too heavily on such systems that terrorists et al. would simply not use them and hence drop of the radar - making this database cost us freedom and liberty without achieving anything for us.

So yeah, thoughts?
