I had AT&T service for two miserable years and couldn't get a connection anywhere in my area.  Everyone else near me with the same service had pretty much the same results.  I couldn't wait to get out of that contract.  The current iPhone complaints clearly show that not much has changed.  There are some places where the service works fine I guess, but i'm not in one of them.

That said, my bigger complaint is with any device that is tied strictly to a single carrier (any carrier).  As long as there is no competition for the service, there is no incentive for the carrier to improve.

If the device is good enough, the carrier would probably not stop me from buying.  But for me, a bad carrier is a big strike against it.
