Microsoft: Who do you want to execute today?

Moonlight never even had a chance.  The only way Linux is going to get first-class Silverlight support is if Microsoft develops it; an external group simply can't keep up.

At some point I spoke highly about Silverlight. When I was a computer animation class, I did a presentation on Silverlight and how it kicks Flash's ass. My talk apparently convinced the professor to switch the class to Silverlight the following semester.

Why did I do this? Because I like .NET, and I actually believed that Moonlight would offer an awesome Silverlight experience. I talked also about Moonlight in my talk and how Microsoft is going to help make an open source player that will be even better then their player. I actually believed this. Perhaps I am a sucker.

I stopped believing that awhile ago. Now if someone asks me about Silverlight I tell them to stay far away from it. Thankfully Silverlight hasn't really taken off and I hope it never does.

while i do think the issue of getting Moonlight up to date is valid i hardly see that as a reason to dump the whole thing.

honestly IMHO if MSFT make the WIndows and Mac versions then i am ok with that.

not that i do not totally want to see a good moonlight V4 that is the same in features as silverlight V4 .... just that 99.9% of my users are fine without a linux version.

You hope that silverlight doesn't take off because the tiny percentage of people using linux as a desktop don't have first class support?

That's a weird attitude unless you're a linux desktop user. And if you are a linux desktop user, get used getting left behind.

Why care about Moonlight? Silverlight runs on both Win and Mac. Oh wait, I get it, it doesn't run on DOS.

It finds lightbulbs.

I'm barely getting up to speed with SL3. Are they trying to catch up with Flash version-number wise or something? Still, awesome that they keep developing that hard. I wish the IE team followed suit.

When will Silverlight come to a Windows phone?

and  by then no one will have one ....  Sorry but the phones and WInMo are just way way to far from common....

MSFT has some major work to do IMHO to get back into the phone market and compete with the storm, the pre and the iPhone.

If I'm not mistaken, Silverlight is already on the 360. The ads in the dashboard are Silverlight.

The Bandito Coder

Just as an idea it possible to write a Silverlight Application that runs in the browser, which then can be dragged (The application) on dropped on the desktop, maitaining the application statee. Where now it detects its on the desktop thus enabling extra features.

ClickOnce taken a step further.

Think as these applications as;-

 Gadgets / Widget

 No installation applications.

Silverlight 3 has install to desktop feature. Just a checkbox in your solution properties I think and that's it.

Issue with the offline Silverlight is there's no DOM access. So if you have Silverlight stuff that talks to the webpage(i.e. mouse wheel code), then you lose that functionality.

SL has only gotten factors better in every way since your presentation.  Moonlight and SL are different products by different vendors.  Not sure why your dissing SL because of ML.

If Microsoft doesn't have any ambition to control and regulate the web, they'd make Silverlight open source and an open standard. Until then I could care less about some new EEE plan Microsoft intends to waste money failing on.
