I'm talking about Aero UI. You haven't seen it yet unless you work at Microsoft and have access to the Aero UIs.

geeklings, well you had morons [no offense] complaining about much space the sidebar took up, even though it could be auto-hidden, and could be run so the panes opened up as stay on top windows instead of in a sidebar.

well whatever hopefully there will be another solution for notifications; just that i hope these complaints arent what caused the sidebar to be taken out
The sidebar offers way to present certain kind of information and access. The widescreen argument is good, but if the intent is to show notifications of importance, its essential that user can pick the critical notifications (incoming call/important person instant messaging/mail from certain person) and get them shown during any moment, including playing movies, games, using VM full screen. In these cases the notification should arrive fading smoothly increasing opacity over time as to not distract movie or game with old fashion popup with junk information.

Also if you are playing a game, but there is a boring moment (waiting for multiplayer game to start etc), there should be something like the "new os x" feature, showing all the interesting "widgets", rss feed type of information overlayed on top of the full screen game when user feels like it. But possibly distracting stuff should not be enabled by default.

So essentially the side bar would just provide a feed of junk information. I'd much rather have tight user control over what information I think is of importance and have it shown any time anywhere. Sound notification in Star Trek computer voice is good alternative, but not until it sounds 100% like the Enterprise computer!

What's really cool is that the entire company can watch live as real users try to use our new stuff (they video it and stream it live).

How often do you get to see someone punch their monitor?  Or slam their keyboard?

MisterDonut: I think you'll like the UI. I was blown away by it. By the way, there's no sidebar. Forget everything you know about Longhorn until you see it.

What do you mean no sidebar? that and the slate theme were the features I liked the most about Longhorn.  The only other way I will be happy is if you guys make a Konfabulator type app that gives me widgets.  Dang it, come on at least make the sidebar an option.
