Its a 3.75 GB download from MSDN and its already throttled. Even if I could order the DVD now, I doubt that I would have the patience to install it.

I wouldn't get too excited... All that site lets you do is sign up for a DVD to be shipped to you. The current wait time is 2-4 weeks.

It will let you get the bits, just not instant gratification.

I agree that it wasn't open... But then again I didn't find Quake 2 open either. They are all based on go from point A to point B.

But that said I found the story truly immersive and didn't find myself getting at all bored (a problem for me in many games). I don't care much for the ending. But loved some of the bits in the game (like the ant lions, jail - gun defence etc) so I feel my money was well spent and intend on buying the addon when it is out.

The only truly open games are multiplayer like battlefield 1942 where you just need to complete a very large mission and you pick the tools and route to do it. No single player game (except A.I. in the above scenario) has ever been that open. And frankly I don't see how a single player game that wants to tell a story could be. How can you get across the story if the person is doing what they want?

simple: Logistics

they have to print stuff in the different languages, brun the disks, have folks assemble packages and a bunch of other stuff.... and they have to then ship the orders. even in the usa the web site says
"( 2-4 weeks for delivery)"

a) I actually took the day off to play the game ;)
b) How does staggering help? If it's released all at once, then everyone gets it at the same time. If it's staggered... how does this help anyone?

My understanding of the VS2005 stagging is for the shipment to reach Europe, which is fair enough... but if it's anything like the MPA and WPS, as a way of dry-wringing the market to soak up as many customers as possible, then add another reason to switch to Borland.

For the same reason it was stupd for Valve to release HL2 everywhere at the same time. My guess is that you were able to play it immediately. Most of the rest of the world was not. They are staggering the release because they want to provide service we can all have access to.
