Software activation and product end of life

Software like Window XP and Office requires activation after being installed. How will this be handled after Microsoft announces that those products have reached their "end of life"? Will Microsoft continue to run activation servers "forever", or will people be forced to upgrade when they fail to activate after a reinstall?
