I'm not sure how far Cygwin can abstract linux over windows. I'm not sure if cygwin would let you use LVM with windows. LVM(linux volume manager) I believe has such functionality.

I realize Linux and OSx have this functionality I'm looking for... but to put it in Beer28 terms: This is Shaded's method of opensourcing Windows.

I'm trying to avoid using a support call for my EA aggreement to figure this one out but I bet if I call in they will find someone to custom job the code for me. ... just a hunch I could be wrong.

The point I'm trying to demonstrate is Windows is not as closed as some would think.

... but I'll only make my point if someone out there knows how to make this happen for me.

No joy. Ghost tried it, then choked. Created partition is recognized but is not dynamic still only "removable"

So I'm looking at hacking INF files to get it to treat the USB mass storage device the same way it treats 1394 firewire drives.. which seems very hairy to me, I don't have that kinda free time.

Feature request anyone? I think I'll call Microsoft support this week. I have one incident that will go bad at the end of the month...

No it isn't check what tab it is under. It is under the "watched" tab, that means Mike has decided that this thread is good enough to keep a watch on. If it was under the threads tab or replies tab (if he hadn't actually replied to the thread) then it would be a problem.

Microsoft probably didn;t want to have to deal with people making a RAID array out of USB memory keys and then calling to complain when their raid set died after yanking the keys out.

Hey I miss the dairy product gone bad avatar.

And uh... I don't buy that. Microsoft generally tries to hide the complexity, but usually with a few regedits and clicking past a few warnings they will let you do any ol crazy thing you want.

I just want to boot windows off a usb array for some strange reason. Magmedia always seemed like alien hardware to me, computers should be all chips. Talk about reliability and shock resistant.

After you're done, could anybody tell me how I could change my built in 9-in-1 Media Reader from "Safely Remove Hardware" things to a regular set of removalbe disk drives?

Because it's built in. I can't remove it. And if I accidentally hit it I need to repoot my PC if I want to read SD cards.
