I was really looking foward to this. Sad to see another feature dropped.
Article

Oh well, probably be 2010 before the feature set makes it worthwhile..

EDIT: I loved this comment of at /. (yes..I have to confess sometimes I read it :-0 )
It goes without saying that Miguel Icaza will have a
reference implementation of Monad written in C#, running under Mono and
incorporated into the GNOME environment by 1Q2006.In
a reflection of it's GPL nature, it will be called Gonad, and the boot
splash will proclaim: "Gonad: Doesn't Microsoft wish they had one?"

At this rate of removing components from longhorn, Microsoft should call it Windows XP Service Pack 4

Sad news indeed. =(
I've had the public beta installed since it became available, and I was really looking forward to this. The command prompt in XP is woefully inadequate for anything beyond the most basic tasks, and MSH really looked like it could have one-upped most UNIX shells available today.

Dude!  Never turst "Mary Jo Mis-quote"!!!!

she is so full of it !!!

she says:

"In an interview published on Microsoft's Web site this week to coincide with Microsoft's Tech Ed conference, Senior Vice President Bob Muglia acknowledged that Monad won't make it into either the Longhorn client or server. "

I found one reference in that to the term "Monad"

and it says:

"The Windows Server System is a key part of “The right server for the right job” and integrates key functionality — such as identity management — across all the workloads to give administrators a consistent approach to each workload. In terms of simplifying administration and management we have made great progress, but still have much to do. For example, we are changing the command line environment in Windows using a new object-oriented command line technology, code-named “Monad,” that will exceed what has been delivered in Linux and Unix for many years. It will take three to five years to fully develop and deliver. We’re also building a next-generation user interface, taking our existing Microsoft Management Console (MMC) technology to the next level in terms of usability. "

so he said in detail:
"It will take three to five years to fully develop and deliver. "

thats not a - it won't ship for xx or yy
just that he expects it to take that long to get to the level of functions / features / and so on that they have in mind....

Like .Net had to go thru dev/beta/v1/v1.1/v2
it's been about 5 years now... now they are very close to the vision of .net as a shipping relaity in a number of products and uses...

I wonder if Mary Jo got this a little bit wrong. I was in the Monad breakout session at TechEd 2005 yesterday, MGT320 Next Generation Command Line Scripting: Monad by Jeffrey Snover. The room was packed out, with many more, like me, sitting on the floor. It was a big room, so I'm guessing there were around 750 people in there. It was great session, and Jeffrey did a great job. Many demonstrations drew spontaneous applause.

The next Beta of Monad is due out in a few weeks, and according to Jeffrey, Monad will appear in WinFX (the framework) rather than Longhorn (the operating system). That means that when it releases, Monad will be available on Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 operating systems, too.

So maybe Mary Jo got confused or something. The distinctions between WinFX and Longhorn, and what's where on any given day, certainly can be confusing at times. The message I got loud and clear yesterday is that Monad is coming to a platform near you as part of the Longhorn Wave.

"Got Confused" ??

She *IS* confused and then some....

I read some of the stuff and very soon realized that she just seems to spew forth attention grabbing titiles and fills them with almost-right mis qoutes and FUD-O-Matic.

A while back she was claiming that it was some kind of big news and major change that LH was not 100% based on .Net
before that I recall when she was writing about LH delays and missed dates -- BEFORE THE LAST PDC! like way before it was still like Alpha 2 or some such...

so overall her record in my view is one next to the tabloid reports of UFO's and such...
Longhorn is XP Service Pack 3. Or just a lousy upgrade from Windows 2000. No! No! No! Let's call it, "Windows Delayed and Shattered Hopes Edition"!!! Wink

duh! We have as much DRM as we could ever want and more! Where are those padlocked devices when you need them? 8-)

Hey Microsoft, I have a tip to get more functionality into Longhorn -- Go down to the local Apple store, buy some OS X for 86x and stick some stickers over the parts about Apple. - "Windows OS X!" - Here is what that might look like:

Actually, it isn't XP SP3.

But you won't believe me, so...

I'm already surprised by some of Longhorns features, for example it not being compatible with my hardware.. I think that's a great part of it, do you not?

Yeah. Firefox will be the default installed browser. Smiley Due to some worthless lawsuits against microsoft from idiots in the EU, IE will still be in development. Wink

Can you say how it compares to OSX Tiger right now (for what you've seen)? You're welcome to say if LH beats it. Smiley

If you can answer this, then I'll have no more questions to ask.

If you are correct why are Microsoft keeping so tight lipped about it? Isn't it in their best interest to get people excited about Longhorn? All I've heard about is User mode drivers and that is it from the "under the hood" area; can't say I'm exactly ecstatic about those.

But I have learned two good things here.
1.) Longhorn will be realeased in components, bits of a Lego set, perhaps in Happy Meals.
2.) MJF needs to be spanked.

Thanks guys!

Can you please elaborate on the components bit?
