Greetings,
If it automatically created a 'forum' for your posts, and then the comments button went there, I might agree...
As for the 'Comments will be obsoleted by a new technology' idea, here's something to think about...
It's not about you being able to find everyone who's commenting on your article, or even everyone being able to find who's commenting about your article.
It's about the perception of feedback, of conversation. Not even
necessarily the reality. There've been some active, passionate
comment threads on your blog that you never took part in. If you
disable comments, saying, 'Trust me, I'm watching the blogosphere for
your responses...', it doesn't give the same perception of conversation.
If you disable comments, pointing people to C9 forums, saying, 'start a
thread if you have something to say', you're adding several steps into
the mix of giving feedback (not to mention registration).
The perception becomes 'it's too much work, he must not want to hear
what we have to say'. The perception becomes, 'He disabled
comments, he must not be listening'. In reality, you could be the
most feed-addicted person in the world (a title I'm tempted to give you
anyway), but perception defines our reality, so to the vast majority,
you would be no longer listening.
For me, and I believe for many others, that you listen is a huge
part of what makes yours an interesting (and even occasionally
addictive) blog. That I have the perception that I can debate an
issue with you (even this one!), whether or not you actually take part,
is a powerful fiction, and not one I think you want to disable any time
soon.
