Bob Stein has just posted that the next version Windows, currently codenamed 'Longhorn', will in fact be named Windows Vista.

Looking at whois.net seems to confirm that all 'vista' variations are aready registered.

I always liked XP. Although I was shocked it wasn't called 2001 like we had expected.

Nah - I don't know anything more than you guys at this point. In fact, I just alerted PR that their little "heads up" was kind of redundant, since it's already leaked. Gotta get them on the Cluetrain...

Looks like it was announced at our internal sales event today down in Atlanta, and was promptly leaked to e.g. Mary Jo Foley

Has anyone tested it so far what's the hardware requirments like?

Windows 2006 Smiley

Name branding is a costly and time-consuming endeavour. Everyone knows what Windows is and historically, the windows platforms has been named after the year it was released. (Except XP and pre 95)

Take a survey on the street and ask what is windows vista ? How many would give the correct answer? Quite few I imagine. And just as a reference, compare the results with the question what is windows 2006.

So why change someting thats working.

funny news.com and slashdot arnt on it yet either .. laggards!

I was kind of hoping they would call it Longhorn. Just think of the marketing potential:

Microsoft Longhorn: A Longer, Harder, Faster, Better computing experience.

Ok, kudos to our PR team - I got a response from them within 6 minutes!

The response included official guidelines for us to respond to any questions about this over the next 10 hours. Of course, the guidelines started by saying that they understood it was "kind of a lost cause". Heheheheh

Fatalism.
I'll repeat it here...

I like the name Windows Vista.

It's not an unusual word - at least to me, heh. It's ordinary, mundane, and hardly obtuse.

And it fits perfectly with the "Windows" idea.

Kudos to whoever came up with the name. Ideally, this will end the awful track record Microsoft has of naming things...

Oh, and there's a large advantage over using the year. Years are dated very quickly. "Windows 2006" would sound old in 2009, while "Windows Vista" wouldn't.

It will probably take me a while to quit calling it Longhorn.

Vista sounds like a cheap American car. Tongue Out
I like Longhorn much more. But I learn to like Vista. Someday.
