Question about IE8 tabs

I have a question about IE8 Beta 2 tabs:

In IE7, you had the option to open new tabs right next to the current tab. In IE8 that option has been removed and new tabs open all the way to the right (or within the same "group": useless in my case). Now some people have commented that they prefer it that way, but why take away the option to choose between the two modes? The way I browse, I open multiple new tabs from the same page by middle-clicking with the mouse. Lets say I do a search on Google. I scan down the page and middle-click on all interesting looking results. In IE7, all the new tabs were nicely grouped to the right of the current tab. Now, if I have many tabs open, the new tab gets lost all the way to the right, and I have to scroll to the new tab, view it, close it and then try to find my original starting tab again somewhere to the left. Really annoying.

And yes, I know about tab groups, but I found them to be useless for me because often times all the new tabs I open come from the same general site, which means they are all in the same group. I even turned grouping off and it still opens new tabs all the way to the right.

Is there maybe a plugin that will restore this functionality in IE8?

In the Network tab it says for example:
Image PID Address ...
blah 1234 bw-in-f147 ...

My question is simply, what I need to change in order to permanently show the numerical IP instead of this bw-in-f147?
I don't really care what the change is because this kind of criminally moronic feature of not showing the actual address (ipv4 in this case)warrants a change by any means necessary. In a sane interface you could maybe right click the headers and configure the columns to show the useful information.

Now I know you can jump through hoops to turn that address into something useful if you are quick enough to do it while it's still visible.

edit: Looks like ctrl+c does work to copy the information but without the proper address it's still of little use.

SEATTLE - A video for the title track on hip-hop veteran Common's forthcoming album, "Universal Mind Control," begins with a digital music player pulsing to the beat. The viewer is pulled through the screen into the gadget's guts, where the cool, collected rapper lets loose an easy stream of lyrics.

It takes hitting rewind a few times to notice that the music player isn't one of Apple's slim new iPods. It's a Zune, and it's made by Microsoft Corp.

Since it first landed two years ago, the Zune has been the butt of many jokes, like how its wireless music sharing feature would be great, if only a second person would buy one. But while Apple Inc. has counted on the sex appeal of its ever-thinner devices to keep consumers turned on, the Zune team has been beefing up its software and courting artists like Common, a dashing MC with mainstream appeal who might just help make Zune — dare we say it? — cool.

In an interview, Common described Zune as "progressive, fresh, innovative," a far cry from critics' refrain that it's an also-ran in a race iPod has already won. When he's pressed to explain, it becomes clear that Common is hooked less on the device than the way the Zune's software makes connections between artists, turning up new sounds for him to explore.

Playing to its strength among Hispanic consumers, Microsoft in September made an exclusive deal to sell digitally remastered albums by some of Fania Records' biggest names, including the Fania All-Stars and Celia Cruz. New Xbox Experience - What is it?

I keep hearing about the "New Xbox Experience" that is coming soon, but I haven't heard much about specifics.

I know there will be some Netflix integration of some capacity, but other than that I am clueless about the whole initiative.

Whats the deal?

When is the update being pushed out? Last night I logged into live and it stated that there were 2 days left until the new experience, but today MS is stating 3 days left?

Hm... is it secret or is it possible to know what hardware / line etc C9 uses? Would be cool to know. Like, Slashdot, they tell what kind of servers and setup they got. Maybe it has been posted and I missed it?

Singularity RDK 2.0 released

The Singularity Team has released version 2.0 of its RDK (Research Development Kit).

Has anyone played with this already? Everybody was excited about Singularity some time ago (except corona_coder, who will probably declare Singularity as "dead") but it's been a while since I heard anything about it on C9.

Along with one relatively major change, the use of a Silverlight 2 video player, and various bug fixes (wiki editing works again, for those of you that noticed it was broken and ordered lists should render just fine now ... to pick two examples that I worked on today), we also have a new 'fun' feature: User specific CSS.

Go to your profile and click Edit, then put whatever CSS you want into this box and we'll put it on the page for you after our CSS, allowing you to override whatever settings you feel like. What if you put bad CSS or broken CSS? Well, it will only affect you... so we aren't terribly worried about policing what you put into this box. Of course, considering the audience, I expect to be shown reasons why we shouldn't give you this option within a few hours... but until then I'll stay blissfully optimistic.

Hey, what about sharing our settings... can I just say I want my C9 to look how jamie sets his up? Nope. As cool as that would be, it would essentially be giving another user the ability to spit malicious code out onto the page when you visit... which is just too crazy for me to feel comfortable with. Go ahead and post your CSS changes to the site though, and people can pick and choose the changes they'd like to use.

Come up with an awesome change, or even just a good one, that you think should be the default? Post it up, and we'll look at just making those changes directly in the site's main CSS.

Now all we need is a code formatting option for CSS!

Debugging Crazy Video Flashing

So for the past few months, when I return to my computer and move my mouse to wake up the screen, crazyness happens. The screen will flash on and off crazily, with each flash resetting my mouse cursor back to the middle of my screen.

Sometimes I can catch a glimpse of programs hanging in the background, one by one. And sometimes Vista will ask me if I want to disable Aero.

This doesn't always happen though, I cannot figure out what, if anything causes this. I've formatted at least 4 times since this started happening, in the hopes it is something I've installed.

I use Office, Live Suite, BOINC for Rosetta @ Home ( I recently added this, it happens without this app) and A few PC games, like Call of Duty.

I have also been through 3 ATI drivers. 8.9 8.10 and 8.11. A bug could be carried through all three drivers, but I figure a google search would have turned up such a thing. I also install the latest Intel Chipset installation utility from their website.

Another issue that happens is sometimes when I logout, or do a "switch user", my screen will go black, like it is recieving no signal. If I press arrow keys tab and enter a few times, I usually can login to the user with no password. If I am really luck, I can press a combination, type my password, press enter, and get logged in. I assume this is related somehow.

Now in addition, I have ran memtest86+ for 26 hours, it all passed, I have ran Prime95 for 18 hours, it passed.

This past time that my screen flickered alot I pressed control atl del, selected log off, waited for a bit, and my PC went to a black welcome screen. I then luckily logged back into my account, and I am now here typing to the world just fine.

Wtf is going on here? I've tried formats (with different Vista Discs), I've tried different drivers, I've tried stress testing (including my video card, with folding @ home).

Any ideas on how to track this down? I am betting it is software, it seems too inconsistant to be faulty hardware. In my short experience, hardware either works, or does not. If it is hardware, I wonder WTF it is.

This looks like an interesting evolution of VSeWSS, though it appeared the only part that would perhaps require VS 2010 is the Server Explorer additional capability to handle SharePoint hierarchies.

Questions:

Is MOSS 2007/WSS3.0 supported, as well as SharePoint vNext?
Will VSeWSS for 2005 and 2008 be updated to support similar functionaliy (where possible)?
Will VS 2010 support Workstation-based development, working against a MOSS/WSS server, rather than keep the VPC tax?
Will there be a CustomFieldType template?
Will there be a ContentType template?
Wil there be a SiteColumn template?
How about a wizard for configuring FBA?

Also (for anyone not already aware) note that much of the demonstrated functionaliy is also currently available courtesy of Carsten Keutmann's excellent SharePointManager and WSPBuilder.

Or why is Flash still preferd by MS? Today MS started a new viedeo portal in Germany http://movies.msn.de/ and guess what, they using Flash as streaming client. So why don't use the opportunity to bring SL on more machines?

Mostly useful when doing paging (i.e. take, skip) queries.

I am having Share Point Portal 2003 with share point portal service 2.0 build 11.0.8173.0 and SQL 2000. I have migrated server from one Windows 2003 Server primary domain to secondary domain. I have taken backup from share point backup utility and restore it on another server. I am facing problem while adding user into portal. Whenever I add user and provide permission e.g. content manager/web designer or contributor, it gives me error An unexpected error has occurred. I am not able to add the user. Any thoughts? what could be the problem?

'Registering' a VS designer

I am using DevExpress XtraReports in one of my projects.

When I open one of the reports, I get taken directly to teh code behind, and even if I right-click the item, there is no option to View Designer.

In a different project on the same machine, they work perfectly.

Do I need to edit my sln or something to reinstate the relationship between the reports and their designer?

I'm working on a project for a client, and this has been really bugging me. I'm not quite mathematical enough to solve this problem by myself and I desperately need some insight. I'm vainly attempting to generate three-dimensional prisms in XNA for the display of cabinets. So far, I've got the following code but it does not draw properly at all. I know the actual draw code is correct as it works for other shapes, so it's the vertex and index buffers that are wrong.

If anyone can point to a sample or something I'd be incredibly grateful. So far, everything I've got I've derived from my limited knowledge of three dimensional mathematics.

My current, and non-functioning, solution is a constructor method (don't worry about the length, I'll refactor it later) taking an array of Vector2s as the outline of the polygon to extrude into a prism and a Vector3 that represents the centre of the prism (thus giving it depth and direction).

Currently I:

Create a rotation matrix by concatenating three matrices constructed using the angle derived from the dot product of the prismVector and the three cardinal axis
Use this to transform the 2D vertices into 3D and subsequently create the bottom by subtracting prismVector
Here the problems start (I know they're not above because I've simplified most of that out at the moment)

Generate the caps of the prism:

Of course I don't expect anyone to actually read all that and come up with a solution, but I'm sure this is something that people have had to do a million times before and I'm absolutely confused as to why I can't find anything with Google (maybe I'm searching for the wrong thing…).

If you know of any samples or have ever had to do anything like this before, please help.

Vista minimize preview is useless.

When you minimize a window and hover the mouse over it in taskbar, it shows the contents of that window... well, not really. It shows the last shot of it just before you minimized it. Which is basically totally useless. ( for me )... there should be an option to allow me to see their changes "live"... if I got a couple of windows minimized, I still have to restore them to see what's going on in those. Which is really not too good when you could just hover your mouse over them see without the need to restore.

DVB-Subtitles in Windows Media Center?

So about a month ago I finally got my Windows Media Center working. But I have a problem.

I'm using a DVB-T Tuner, because that's how we get digital TV in Denmark.

But I get no subtitles at all! From searching google, it turns out that Media Center Edition doesn't support DVB-Subtitles.

Is there any patch or anything like that I can use, third-party or third-party? My family doesn't understand foreign languages very well. So subtitles are really damn important. It kinda renders the TV useless, and a Vista home license isn't cheap. So I would *really* expect media center to support it. I'm not happy about the fact it doesn't.
