Mobile Marketplace for Freeware?

Hi I wrote a freeware application for windows mobile and would like publish it on the new marketplace as freeware but I'm really struggling to get registered. The registration goes around in a loop and I can't seem to find anything like a forum or support contact for this? If someone could point me in the right direction I would be very greatful for the help.

Ohio State Windows 7 Install Fest!

I volunteered to help at the Windows 7 install fest at OSU. The Microsoft Student Partner there organized it.Mark Harris was there along with many IT professionals from the Columbus OH area.

We had at least 253 installs of Windows 7. A few people even brought their desktops in. In additon some mac users came. Afterwards we played some ODST in the library ;)

DeVaris Brown of Microsoft brought a TouchSmart PC to play with. Our digital union wanted to keep it to show 7 off, but that was not possible In General, students seemed to love Windows 7. A lot of PC gamers and scientists alike.

Jason & Charles Future Interview Pair-Up

I've been refreshing my memory on the awesome Lang.NET subject videos and I saw some potential if Charles and Jason teamed up to interview a future victim on C9. I say that because they had a good vibe in the Jason Olson: Composing Programming Languages, F# and OO video and both have really good angles on multiple different subjects. Jason seems to be really current on modern development and is now more in the trenches, and Charles is the decorated C9 vet with really insightful questions and philosophy during the interview action.

I'm just putting the idea out there but I'd really enjoy a future event of Charles and Jason to team up against some new blood on C9 to see how things turn out, hopefully others may also want to see this too.

BTW hello C9 forum, this is my first forum post.

App Store for Windows?

I have seen a lot of talk about an app store for windows mobile, but I do not know if there is such a thing for windows OS.

I am trying to figure out how to easily deploy an application for sale. I really want to make registration/ licensing easy.

Does anyone have a suggestion for such a website or place.

Outer Joins in Linq

Does anyone know why outer joins in linq are so crazy?

Example:

Microsoft's copyright infringement

Hey, note how I'm not accusing Microsoft of "stealing" GPL code (because then I wouldn't be morally consistent when talking about torrenting moviez and empeethreez, lol).

It's been widely reported that Microsoft apparently has been using GPL-licensed code in a proprietary EULA piece of software without a license from the original author. The discovery was made by Rafael earlier.

My bet's on Microsoft going "omg! we had nooo idea!" (whether they're sincere or not, I've no idea) and coughing up a few grand to the original author as a means of coercing him into dropping any idea of legal action and providing them with a license. I do not believe Microsoft would ever consider licensing their infringing tool as GPL (imagine what Steve Ballmer would say).

False press releases by public companies

I got recently got burned by 2 false press releases by Zale Corp. and a penny stock.

I am now partaking in action for both cases.

Ballmer wouldn't shut up saying it was going to happen no matter what.

The share price often rises shortly after the announcement of these talks, then falls shortly after. Who is else is sick of this?

Who else thinks that a deal should be reached BEFORE a public announcement in the interest of the shareholders?

I know there isn't a steadfast law on this, but there should be.

Is there a better way to write this Enum extension method?

So I got really tired of writing the following type of code:

...or even worse, the suggested way of doing this:

}

This gets especially tiresome and error prone if you need to check for complex flag combinations. So I thought that maybe an extension method might make it easier, but the best I could come up with so far is:

    return (thisEnum.GetHashCode() & flags.GetHashCode()) != 0;
}

public static bool HasAllOf(this Enum thisEnum, Enum flags)

Now you can simply write:

Doesn't seem much easier but as I said when you start needing to check for complex combinations, the code becomes cleaner and easier to follow. But those extension methods have some problems:

Relying on GetHashCode is a bit of a hack and isn't guaranteed to give the actual value of the enum. Or is it?

How fast is calling GetHashCode vs casting to a int?

While the value you passed into the extension method has to be an Enum, there is no type checking to ensure it is the same type of enum as the one that the call is made on.

Any suggestions to improve this?

To this end, does anyone (or anyones Granny?) have any old picture postcards of Los Angeles that they could let me scan*? I know, its a long shot, but you just never know ...

Why is ASP more expensive than PHP?

So, my company received a couple of estimates to remake our website (we really need to, the actual one has been done so poorly that we have serious SEO problems). The goal is to present the company, redo the catalog/e-store and plan to add a little social to it in the near future, all of it in two languages. Nothing extremely complex, but to do things well, it requires a little bit of work.

What surprised me is that all of the estimates we gathered from different contractors are much much cheaper when using PHP than ASP by a factor of 2 or more. Honestly from the little ASP and PHP I know, I don't understand what could justify such a sharp cost difference.

Is it because ASP is more complex or because it is associated with fancier development? Or maybe PHP has more widely available modules?

hey well i got my ipod nano 5th generation the one with the video camera.i have heaps of videos that i have taken with it, but i dont no how to get those videos and put them in my computer. they wont show in my itunes wen i plug it in i dont get it, how do i get those videos and put them on my comp.
I also want to upload a home movie from a DVD to my PC and put it on my IPOD.
Can anyone please walk me through the steps. I have no clue what I am doing!

SilverLight Player Nearly Unusable

I am having a lot of issues witht he Silverlight Player. I am running SL version 3.0.40818.0. I have been having this same issue on multiple machines, 2 Windows 7 and one Windows Vista. I have confirmed that it is happening in both FireFox (3.5 and 3.6b1) and IE8. I have a feeling this may be related to VS2010 Beta 2. Which I have installed on all machines. .

The video never lines up correctly within the box. Depending on where I have the browser scrolled it gets offset. It doesn't really play either, it shows a random frame every 15 seconds or so. Sometimes it never shows up at all, it remains black. In both browsers if I double click on the box it will go to full screen and work correctly. When I exit full screen it will still be broken in the page.

Does Windows 7 have the famous 2TB limit?

Unlike Windows Vista, Windows 7 uses two partitions in the standard configuration. A 100MB boot partition and usually the rest of the drive as the system partition.

Windows Vista has the KB946557 issue. Does this issue arise from INT13 support? I don't have an EFI BIOS for GPT boot support on my X58 chipset based mainboard.

What I'd like to know is, if Windows 7 can boot and run if the system partition is larger than 2TB. Call me crazy, but I'm running out of space and would need to expand it. :)

Adding Elements to XmlNode w/o XmlDocument

I'm stumped on this one, been googling for hours...

I have a central xmldoc that I use to store all of my app settings, etc..

What I'm trying to do is simply pull an entire node from that file into one of my child forms where I can parse it out.

In the child form I also want to build a new node from new settings and pass it back into my central xmldoc config.

I need to do this without holding a reference to the parent xmlDoc.

I simply want to build an xmlNode from scratch, but I cannot figure out how without using XmlDoc to .CreateElement();

Certainly there has to be a way to XmlNode.CreateElemenet or XmlNode.AppendChild(new xmlElement())...

Any pointers would be much apperciated.

^ What a load of rubbish. I cringed when I read it.

Sophos should've just said, "Hey, BTW, just a reminder, but you still need anti-virus with Windows 7. You shouldn't be surprised by this. Please consider our product." Instead they're acting as if someone promised Windows 7 would make malware impossible. (WTF did they get that idea from?)

It's also frustrating to read reports from people saying Sophos showed malware "bypassing UAC" when it's just avoiding the requirement for admin access, something quite different.

The whole UAC debate is frustrating. Whichever position you find yourself in it seems you end up arguing with people in every direction. There aren't sides to the debate; it's a mad free-for-all that spawns little useful discussion. So much time & energy is spent arguing about stupid stuff -- like the notion that UAC is supposed to stop code from running at all rather than, at best, limit what running code can do -- that there's no room left to discuss the more subtle and interesting points. By the time they're raised everyone's too tired and annoyed to do them justice. It's a shame.

It's a strange debate indeed where those who, on the face of it, are pushing in the same direction frustrate me far more than anyone pushing the other way.

Music, religion, politics... I think UAC needs to be added to that list! :-)

This what what happens when you call: Directory.GetFiles(path)
Directory.GetFiles(path, "*")
Directory.GetFiles(path, "*", SearchOption.TopDirectoryOnly)
InternalGetFileDirectoryNames(path, path, "*", true, false, SearchOption.TopDirectoryOnly);

Which within its own right isn't horrible. But then InternalGetFileDirectoryNames() spends 50% of its processing time doing this: Path.CheckSearchPattern("*");

So I didn't request a search pattern and yet I'm spending 51% of the call checking one for validity. That is a poor design if you ask me. All they needed to do was add this:

if(searchPattern.Length != 1 || searchPattern[0] != '*')
   Path.CheckSearchPattern(searchPattern);

Chrome is Version 4 ... Where are you IE ?

Yesterday Google released Beta version 4 of their Chrome browser with claims of increasing speed of browsing ... 400% from the initial version 1 ( which itself claimed few times faster than IE ) .. So within a year and few months they have 4 versions of their browser.

Critics can say that having so many versions within so short time is not good .. i can agree to that .. they also can say that within each version the features are not much different ... but all have to agree that within a short period of time, they have introduced a lot of features, speedy browsing .. (apart from the fact that they are working on multiple platform and IE is only on windows )

I distinctly remember the same type of dynamism that IE brought with it when it started against Netscape .. by introducing 1-4 version of IE within a short period of 2+ years with a lot of feature additions [anybody remember Favorite icon, IE page transitions ... :) ] ... this was in the era when Internet was still evolving and majority of information still passed thru magazines, word of mouth etc... where as now news spreads more quickly with blogs,twitter,online news etc...

One can say that IE was able to capture market because of Windows OS .. but now google in its arsenal similar things like Google.Com, Youtube, Gmail etc ...

So unless MS wants to see another one of its products go down ... it has to up the ante (for goodness sake it still does not have a proper download manager, Spell check, Still uses a decade old rendering engine) ... and become the same dynamic team for which it earlier came to be known ... What do you think ?

youve got .... 10 shortcuts on your desktop...

lets say you want to search inside - 3 or 4 of those...

why cant you hit cntrl / select / 3 icons - then - right mouse - Search inside (select)

and you get a search box flyout...   "business card" - search = returns results.

?

i tried creating libraries (lol - what a useless feature - or totally unexplained how to use it one...)

maybe even under "Properties" of 3 selected items = new tab - Search within... or something

?
