** first of all - i love meat ... was a chef for 12 years (pre-internet/windows 3.1) **

BUT... we've had our Nova scotia sculptor friends staying with us (for a YEAR - long story) but one of their daughters is a vegetarian - so i hate serving meat and then going " oh and heres your salad .. or tofu or whatever"

So since sept - I just switched to no meat. it wasnt even that hard (wish i could do that with smoking)

Ive learned all about soy "meat-ish" products - mainly learning how to make them myself - using TVP (Textured Vegetable Protien)

In canada we have Loblaws - which in house brand Presidents Choice - makes all kinds of soy based products (meatballs, "chicken" fingers, sausages, ham, etc etc)

Does it taste like ass? ... sometimes... but in general - if you know how to cook - you dont even miss it.

I watched food Inc. on dvd the other night - horrific.. but not if you dont eat meat (well 75% - still issues with veggies)

basically its the COST ... no one will pay more for good proper food (crap i sound like friggin jamie oliver)

damb take-aways and crisps!

anyway - just blabbing. if you want to lose weight though- it seems to work. im down 12 pounds (stone? :p)

so i intend to keep going.

anyone else a veg-head?

...or Jolt, red bull and pizza pops all day? ;)

i liked the new msn butterfly - mainly cause its different but the same.
i tried doing the same angled thing with IE...
didnt really work - but sort of looks funky.

They should maybe try to update IE logo - its looking old
(but still make it recognizable)

You can use remote access to your Home Server WHS folders and copy any media as needed

Then play from imported files

Windows 7 Alt-Tab Bug

Okay, here is a bug I don't think is too obsure, but it is biting me today. It has to do with alt-tab on Windows 7 and aero-peek.

The situtation (common for developers):

I have many opened top level windows on the task bar: 3 explorer windows, dos window, textpad, browser, download window, msdn offline help, visual studio, reflector, paintshop, sync framework 2.0 sdk chm

What normally happens:

When alt-tabbing you get a task list with iconic repsentations of the available top level windows. This is important because it shows when you press tab or shift tab which window is next or prior.

The bug:

On Windows 7 with areo peek enabled, if you pause (release the tab key) for just a second while alt tabbing, the iconic task list moves from always on top, to always on bottom and stays on the bottom.

Reason for pausing ... pausing allow us to visually determine which thumbnail/application is selected. It might take your brain a second (I know mine does) to process the iconic window, expescially when you keep as many windows open as me. Pausing also allows us to think about the next window (continue with alt tab) and what is the prior window (shift-alt-tab).

I have tested in XP, the icon task list is always on top when you alt-tab, no matter how often or how long you pause.

Silverlight CrossAppDomainMarshaledException unknown cause?

I have this silverlight application that is sitting behind a Form Authentication ASPX page.

On some accasions ( now like 50% of the time ) when you run the application and loginto the forms page...

The page containing the silverlight app will come up just fine, but as you hover over any of the buttons on the page

the buttons will not show that the mouse is hovering over them ( They highlight as the pointer lingers over them )

At that point if you click in any of the text boxes on the app and hit any key of the keyboard

the development environment displays...

If you run the browser directly at the application and this behavior is displayed (the buttons not highlighting)

The browser simple POOFS and says some typical thing like IE has exited unexpectedly do you want to tell microsoft about it?

I cannot see to set a breakpoint anywhere in my app where this is happening. It just croaks without any real way to see whats happening to make it croak...

Any ideas?

SOAP12 backward compatibility??

I am trying to generate a proxy using WSE 3.0 (basically to add UsernameToken to the request).

The proxy generation was working fine, the proxy got generated with "Wse" suffix for previous versions of WSDL which were using SOAP.

Now the latest version has SOAP12 and by adding web reference I am not getting "Wse" suffix.

After breaking my head for few hours with the issue I am able to find the root cause:

Here's how SOAP12 namespace is defined in latest WSDL.

xmlns:soap12="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/wsdl/soap12/"

Replaceing this URL to one below (regular SOAP) makes thing work.

Now I am not sure why this is happening and whats the correct schema URL for SOAP12.

Edit: Changed Subject from "Soap12 and WSE 3.0" to "SOAP12 backward compatibility??"

Some recommendations for PDC09. There's many but maybe we should recommend highlights.

VTL04 This talk is about System.Reactive (Rx). Observe the Record method and the ReplaySubject. It may be thought of as a tape recorder + tape; the observable events stick to it and you can reobserve the past. Also notable in this talk is the mentioning that Rx is being ported to native C++. I wohn't use that but find the idea that native programmers will use this awesome and can see it having a dramatic impact. The talk also interacts nicely with Stephen Toub's talk about concurrency constructs for .Net 4.0.

KEY02 Steven Sinofsky on Windows 7 and notably Scott Guthrie on Silverlight 4 - a very funny talk btw. Nice reference application for Silverlight 4; it looks much more interesting than the bland reference applications of the past for Silverlight. And also the example of rendering Flash inside Silverlight inside HTML that was pretty warped. And of course the compositionality of the WPF/SL datamodel where you nest a data grid inside a rich text box.

VS 2005 SQL report OutOfMemory in Preview

I'm trying a report in VS 2005 and I get:

Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.

I know the query is big, about 700-800k records. But shouldn't it be able to handle that?

What can I check/do to troubleshoot this?

Working on a Silverlight Bing maps app but my pushpins don't resolve to the right location. And I just noticed the interactive sdk doesn't show them at the right location too! Anybody else saying this?

I created the Silverlight 3.0 Application from Visual Studio, it created 2 projects, SilverLight client and Web Project, when I just run this project I get error, now I copy the files from the Silverlight Client Application Bin directory to Silverlight Web Project's ClientBin folder and I am doing this manually everytime I make change to client project, I want to avoid it, I know there should be some issue to MSBuild Task for this, But I dont know what to fix and where to fix. 1) WMV downloads don't play with Media Player. Get a codec error. Have to play in zune.

2) If you watch the streams, video is bad and voice track does not match.

What gives? I recommend the Burton video and the Panel with Erik so far.

So I have a car which sits in a technology black hole lacking both a cassett player and an AUX jack. The car sterio is also non-standard (small) and thus you cannot simply buy a generic replacement with an audio jack. Currently I am using one of those radio transmitter but as anyone who has ever used one will attest - it is terrible. It rarely works and when it does the sound quality is worse than a cassett tape.

So my question is -- Has anyone ever seen for sale a speaker that supports being plugged into the "cigarette lighter" (12v?) and obviously has supports a standard audio jack?

Is anybody going to Twiistup 007?

I have opted for the super early bird registration. I still have bracelets and dog tags from past Twiistup events.

The last Twiistup was the crappiest one ever. Yes, Robert Scoble was there and for the first time Microsoft was a sponsor. They had a really crappy XBox 360 booth which no one seemed to care about with a 2-3 very bored looking teenage employees standing by.

Paul Graham is supposed to be at this one making it mildly interesting for me. Otherwise I would not have registered.

Another good event coming up is the Scale 8x conference. I will be at that one too as well as I/O. If you are at any of these events and you would like to eat lunch with myself and possibly some coworkers, send me a PM.

DMX512, serialport and .Net

I've got this device laying around in my room and last week I decided to try if I can control it using vb.net. The device is connected from a usb port on my laptop to the dmx port. It has a serial converter built in so Windows sees it as COM4. The problem is that my application doesn't work. I tried to implement the code based on Ujjal's DMX512 page, did I make any mistake?

Hola todos este es mi problema tengo una firma electronica en aspx que genera llaves publicas y privadas y encripta el archivo que yo desee sea imagenes doc, etc... para encriptar debe buscar en las carpetas de mi aplicacion especificamente _paquetefirmas y con esto encripta el documento. localmente funciona sin ningun problema. EL PROBLEMA SE DA CUANDO LO PUBLICO ME DICE REFERENCIA NO ESTABLECIDA COMO INSTANCIA DE UN OBJETO DEBIDO A QUE BUSCA LAS LLAVES PUBLICAS O PRIVADAS Y COMO NO PUEDE ACCEDER PUES VIENE UN NULL Y ENTRA EN EL CATCH, ¿Que privilegios debo darle a mis carpetas o que debo configurar para que el sistema acceda a estas carpetas y permita encriptar, verificar etc?

Automated Application Testing

I've moved into a position where I've acquired a 12 yr old product to test, etc. We use an InstallShield installer.....

However, no one *SIGH* no one, ever thought of testing, framework, unit, or otherwise. Is there anyway that I can test the installers, I looked into Silk but it wasn't too specific as far as testing methods, abilities. Anyone have any experience with this?

Is there a download for this somewhere that I can't find. Installing ASP.NET MVC itself doesn't seem to add any documentation to the help browser in VS2008. It exists in the online MSDN library though:-

I re-downloaded and did a repair with the MSI of the VS2008 SP1 documentation set just to check, and that doesn't include it.

According to a quote dropped at the PDC and reported by VentureBeat, Ray Ozzie dismisses the notion that apps make a difference to Smartphone popularity.

If this is what Mr Ozzie truly believes then Microsoft has really lost the plot on the mobile market.

But things may not be quite as clear as they seem. When Robert Scoble ran the story on his blog, he got some interesting viewpoints from people who were actually there at the PDC when Ozzie said it. The comments make for interesting reading.
