NSA Spying Program

I've been thinking about a question which has been burning itself in my brain for a while and have to ask somewhere, so I guess this is a good of a place as any.

Why, in all the current NSA spying programs talk among our leaders (elected federal officals) and among all the well schooled journalists across america, is no one is discussing the NSA splitting closets installed at key Internet backbone endpoints across the USA?

These closets located in rooms inside of big privately owned (AT&T) Internet switching centers are under lock and key of the NSA and contain equipment which receives a split copy of the Internet traffic of flowing through these key Internet junctions. There are quite a few of these closets and they've been installed for a while (at least six years, possibly more).

http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2006/04/70619

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Room_641A

And with the recent talk of the NSA Prism program, government leaders, journalists, and private business (Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook) claim that only a small amount of data is handed over to the NSA. What, what, what?

Why do the afore mentioned groups continually fail to mentioned the huge pile of data copied directly at Internet junctions which is parsed and sent to NSA server farms? Then NSA contractors write software to search through and categorize all this data. Why do these people think they need to build a huge new data facility in Utah?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/14/nsa-utah-data-facility

Because they are running of space to store all this data, obviously. Do they really think that the NSA needs a new multibillion dollar facility just to store phone numbers, and times? No, they are storing a lot more data than that. The FBI's Carnivore program (which attempts to siphon off and store Internet emails with content and attachment) still exists, just under a different name and is operated by a Boeing subsidiary.

And finally, putting the phone issue aside to say no one is looking or reading at your email or your Internet text/voice chats, this is very disingenuous. This is a weasel way of hiding what is almost certainly being done. Yes, no one human being at the NSA is reading your emails and chats, that is the job for their custom software running at their server farms. Just because a machine reads your conversations rather than a human doesn't make it any less illegal.

Surface RT Zombies Invade Portland

Over the weekend hoards of Microsoft zombies were seen attacking Timbers fans in and around Jeld-Wen field. Reports of as many as 150 of them have been seen as far as a mile away from the stadium. These zombies typically travel in packs of two to four but we've seen some strays wondering the streets alone looking for an easy kill. Be on the lookout for these creatures as they are easily provoked and are deadly. Here's a poor photograph of one such zombie taken from one of the survivors.

(Sorry for the bad Photoshop of the guy's face. I was just trying to protect the innocent.)

It looks like Microsoft trained about 150 sales personnel (according to one of the participants) to flood the streets of Portland a few hours around game time for Saturday's Timber's match. They also showed in much fewer numbers the next day for the Thorns match.

I walked away from the stadium up NW 23rd quite a ways and found them out that far. It reminded me a bit of Tokyo where on every street corner in certain districts pretty ladies would try and entice you to come to their bar and buy them drinks. "Have you seen the new Surface tablet?", "Have you seen the new MLS app on Windows 8?", "Do you want a free hat?" over and over again block after block.

If you completed the survey they'd give you one of their "grass" hats. I suppose like many Sounders fans Microsoft marketing believes Portland is filled with meth-heads hence the "pot-head" hat. Maybe they were thinking the recent legalization of pot for general consumption in Washington also applied to Oregon?

The promo was in concert with the MLS as they were trying to get folks to look at the "new" MLS Matchday Windows 8 Store App. I have to say the app is pretty good and I use it on occasion but I find I use the Android version on my Note II much more often. I surprised they weren't pushing the WP version of the app as it's just more convenient when at the stadium to catch up on MLS news rather than hauling around a tablet.

All-in-all I do appreciate Microsoft supplying jobs to so many in Portland. Certainly an "A" for effort. It's just sad that the product can't sell itself a little better or in a way that is less annoying.

Orchard Harvest 2013 is just over and the sessions will be available by the end of the month (that is what I read on the Orchard website). I find the Orchard project extremely interesting and I think it would be very good if events like the Harvest conference were covered by Channel9 or if there were more videos on Orchard on this site...

I've found that disabling all the 'File not found' Autorun-entries could leave you with an un-bootable system. I would like to know if there's a way to determine if a 'File not found' entry can be safely disabled/deleted or not.

Academic pricing?

Hi,

Are there still academic tickets? I am trying to register with one as I am a student, but there doesn't appear to be an option to sign up for anything except the regular $2K price which I can not afford. (about 10% of my yearly income at this point...)

Thanks.
