I have a windows xp box. I install all the updates through windows update, online, through high bandwidth. But my family connects through modem, and it is impossible to download everything. So I need to prepare a hotfix, update CD. What are the steps to take to do this?

How do I know I get all the updates, fixes etc...?

Thanks in advance

Madness is all in the mind
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog is a pretty useful site for doing this sort of thing - pick your current SP from the list and and it will give you a list of all available updates since that time.

Once you download your basket you find you've got things in a pretty deep directory structure, but it all works very nicely.

I'll need a job in a few years...MS? ;-)

Download and burn, or order a free copy of Windows XP SP2. That includes all updates to date, so it's pretty easy atm.

It's a good question! Between service packs you need the latest service pack and all the updates that have been released since that time. Downloading the SP is easy. But I've found it less than trivial to just grab the rest. So I've been in the same situation several times, and so far the easiest path have been to just bring the computer over and plug it in to my internet connection. It's great if there is another solution. Some good way of just telling WU that I want to download all the latest updates for say, Win2000 Pro, and then just grab it all. The catalog link turned up a page not found error when I tried it. Any other suggestions?
The Windows Update Catalog works fine for me. Just go to Windows Update site and click on the link to Personalize Windows Update. Then choose the checkbox to show the link to the Windows Update Catalog. The link will now appear on the Windows Update page.
From the Catalog you can not only download updates, patches and other accessories but also any sign driver. That is a good place for getting drivers too then.
I hope that one day the Download Center would be as simple and useful as the Windows Update Catalog, in finding critical updates and drivers.
Of course the easier way is just to download the full network package of XP SP2. That'll bring you pretty much up to date.
