I'd imagine the migration path will be similar to how you migrate Exchange when you acquire a company. You can't have any 5.5 servers in the organization you deploy Exchange 2007 to, so you would have to have 2 AD Forests, and 2 Exchange Orgs, then you would migrate the mailboxes, though I'm not sure how that would work on the Exchange 2007 side, as there is no Exmerge.
The other option I guess would be that you would have to migrate to Exchange 200x first, then migrate to Exchange 2007.
Yeah... I just don't understand why MS have to make this stuff so hard... and why they can't/won't take the time to build an in-line "Migration Wizard" for 5.5.... that will just do it for me... they did it for 5.5 to 2000... but apparently, can't do it for 5.5 to 2003 (and perhaps 2007) for "technical reasons" ...what a load of old cobblers.
To be honest... I need this task like a hole-in-the-head and, like a lot of IT admins, continue to put off the upgrade of our 5.5 servers, simply because I don't have the time, or inclination, to wade through the doco and learn how to upgrade... I have other, more pressing, issues than this, and I really am not in the slightest bit interested in the ins and outs of exchange, or what's involved in getting from A to B... I just need it done and need it to work... and don't feel I should have to pay someone to upgrade it for me, having lashed out a bunch to MS.
MS know how to do it, and know what the required steps are... and I just want to be able to click on some bottons, aswer some questions, and have them do it for me... how hard can that be ??
Because of the above (the lack of a "Migration for Dummies") the only reason I am looking at it now is because Outlook-2007 is forcing my hand, by refusing to talk to a 5.5 server. This really p's me off... force me to upgrade, and then don't even make it easy for me.
MS really drive me to distraction at times.
