Override Render method not triggering

I have .aspx page and .ascx page. There is a gridview inside .ascx page. Gridivew is inside AJAX Update panel.

When i load page for the first time, i can access .ascx overridden render method but after that when i click any link on my grid....it will not go through render method again why why why?

I am trying to achieve grouoing in gridivew so i needd to use htmltextwritter.
