ready to give an answer
I have access to a new (to me) web server.  I'm looking for a particular file, but have NO idea where it might exist in the messy folder structure.  Anyone know of an FTP client that has recursive search (that works)?

I just downloaded trial versions for BulletProofFTP and ConcordFTP which both have the feature.  And unless I'm an idiot (never count that out), neither of them work.  Doing a simple search for a known file in the current directory has no apparent results.

Help!

You can write a simple program easily enough, .NET has a built-in FTP client API you can use (but I don't know how well it complies with the specification, going by Explorer's partially broken implementation and ftp.exe's lack of support for passive-mode I reserve my right to be skeptical).

Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) will recursively search FTP sites.  Just click the Search button on the toolbar.
You can try Ftp Jet 2.0 and try if it can find the desired file for you. This is freeware and has features to compare / search folders and small too..1.3 mb installer. Search google to find the link.

just an idea here on another possible way at this: can you upload a program and run it? can you upload a .net exe ??
you might write a one-off exe that does a set of dir commands and walks the sub-directories...
have it same the results to a text file that you then pickup after it's done.

then you could have a document showing all the files on the web site with folder names, sizes, dates etc....

handy reference document to show the state of things on day one.
