i upgraded to vista from xp MCE. the upgrade seemed to have consumed more space than usual. my question is are there any folders or leftover components i could do away with from my xp installation to regain more hdd space?

You should try the disk cleanup tool. right the main drive (probably C:) in windows explorer. go to properties and then disk cleanup. make sure to cleanup for all users.

Did you run disk cleanup as administrator and select 'Files from All Users'?

The problem is that you'll have a load of crap in the program files folder etc that is basically unusable.

Also if you look in the control panel Programs & features, there should be an entry to remove the leftover components of mce.

Personally, I would take the opportunity to do a clean install, before you get it all set up how you want it.

Look in the root of your harddrive or in you Windows folder to see if there is a folder called Windows.old.

No, but the CD you have should be bootable.

Even if it is an upgrade version, you can still do a clean install, you just need to present your MCE CD to prove you own it.
