I cannot watch DVD's using win 7 Media Center RTM (x64).(Original movie / disk) The picture is totally disorted.

I have tried to install windvd and i can watch DVDs using that program just fine.

When attempting to play a dvd i sometimes get this error message "VIDEO ERROR - Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly. Please restart Media Center and/or restart the computer."

I have tried to uninstall / install media center and media player again.

The machine is a dedicated MCE machine and no other software (except AV) has been install. All drivers are up to date.

Any idea?

???

SOunds very much like a problem i had in the past with an  machine....

media center is not getting the right codec for some reason.

in my case i downloaded an nvidia dvd player trial and that some how may have fixed it....

not sure if that was the trick or if it was something else i did while trying to fix it.

as this is the rtm i would say call msft support and have them figure it out.

at one time i seem to recall dvd drives having player software disks and that they had to provide codecs for dvd playback.

not sure if that still applies or if msft now has them in the media center builds.

well you could say that you are getting ready for customers running windows 7 and found this problem.

by the way i am not saying to chnage the hardware out....  just that when DVD first came out when you bought a drive it would have a disk that inluded a set of codecs for dvd movie playback.

if your pc does not have the right ones media center will have issues.

does windows media player play the dvd?  it may play the disk even if media center does not. if that happens this mans that media center can't find the codec.

also depending on the disk and how your system is configured you might have an issue...

for example i std format dvd if played on an hd style display could look very odd....  streched out.

is the movie wide screen or old style?  what about your display?

does the movie show in full screen or less than full screen?
