The Future of Channel 9 [The Future of Channel 9]

Last week on this week on Channel 9 we announced a project that we’ll use to improve the user experience of Channel 9. This work along with improvements to our content strategy will enable us to bring Channels 8 and 10 content back into Channel 9.

We call this project Revolution 9 and when released it will consolidate Channels 8, 10 and Coding4Fun into Channel 9. The community aspects of Channel 8, will move into Microsoft.com/Student creating one place for students and Microsoft moving forward. TechNet Edge and Mix Online will stay exactly as they are, with no changes.

To find more information on why we’re making the changes on last week's This Week On Channel 9. It does a good job of walking through it in great detail. Over the coming weeks and months we’ll walk you through the experience and our progress towards launch.

Thanks again everyone who visits Channel 9 and our communities. We’re excited about what we have in store for the future and look forward to evolving Channel 9 together.

We released a special edition of This Week on Channel 9 today. As requested (thanks Minh) in this edition, we talked through our survey results and our plans for how we will adjust based on the feedback.

It is a long video (60 minutes, sorry), but I think it does a good job explaining where we want to head with Channel 9 in the future.

Regular viewers of our This Week on Channel 9 Show might have noticed some improvements in our little studio. Larry Larsen and Nic Fillingham have been hard at work in improving our audio, video production along with the layout of the set.

Larry recently published a photosynth of the Channel 9 Studio. Plenty of improvements in the space and we have a few fun surprises planned for the future. ;-)

Welcome to the Channel 9 Team blog.

You know it is kind of ironic (some would say sad) that the team that for over five years who has worked to communicate what is happening behind the scenes at Microsoft does not have its own blog. Sure, many of us have our own personal blogs, but there is no official place on Channel 9 where we post regularly where we're headed.

So today, we're changing that and have created this new blog as a way to explain where we are headed in the future and to listen in on your feedback. We'll post updates when we have updated the site to fix a bug or added a new feature. You can expect content that is a simple text and sometimes videos from members of the team.

Over the years, the continued growth of Channel 9 has exceeded our wildest expectations and we are humbled by the fact that millions of visitors come to Channel 9 each and every month.

Right now, we are in the early days of planning for the next major release of Channel 9. Our goal with the next release is to focus on the basics from site performance, reliability and content discoverability. We want to deliver on a great experience that makes it easier for you to interact with content, your peers and connect with Microsoft.

So with that stayed tuned for news and updates on what's next for Channel 9 and thank you all for participating.

Mix Live [Mix Live]

Once again we'll be broadcasting the Mix keynotes live and bringing the sessions online as soon humanly possibly. (about 24 hours from their recording). We'll also try something different where we have web only "after the show" Q&A with Jeff Atwood and Scott Guthrie. We'll stream it live on the web and you can ask questions via Twitter. we have revolution 9, the channel 9 head with PDC 2008 inside and a limited set of "the ozzman cometh" all ready to give away. I've held back a number of shirts that we can randomnly give out to folks unable to attend the event.

David Shadle was going through his files and found some original Channel 9 Concept Sketches.

These were sketched out after a brainstorming session in my office with Bryn, Charles, David, Robert, Lenn and myself. I've uploaded the entire set to Flickr. The mostly text sketches were created in and around December of 2003 and the final 9 homepage around February with plenty of back forths from Jeff's Office and Davids and the whole team.

It has been a hell of a week. Lots of work on our end to get V4 of 9 stabilized in production and lots of patience on your end while we fixed things that were broken.

Thank you for bearing with us as we made this deployment and for being so patient we deployed V4 first to all the other communities. We still things to fix and clean up, but we believe we're on a steady path of improvement.If you see something you want improved, have suggestion on how to change the UI text or find a bug, please report it on the Wiki.

The great news, is that with this week behind us and V4 now running on all of our sites, we can evolve so much more rapidly. You'll once again see constant improvements on 9, that the early Niners saw..

Ray Ozzie we have an architectural overview of Mesh and over on Channel 10 we have a hands on demo with Nic.

Lots more content to come over the next few days like a Going Deep on Mesh with Charles.

On a thread the other day someone asked for more content like the .NET Show. The Ray Ozzie interview was filmed in our new studio. We hope use it for much more content soon and Robert Hess will be one of the personalities to definitely put it throught its paces.

Sample code for our this post which outlines a simple way via MovieMaker's XML extensibility model to allow for easy watermarking in movie maker.

It works well.

So with that on hand, hopefully soon we'll start watermarking our videos with a little 9 guy head.

My first Channel 9 Interview [My first Channel 9 Interview]

Rory grabbed the camera last week and turned it around on me. Actually my first interview on this site. (I'm a shy behind the scenes kinda guy)

There are a couple of shout outs to folks in the coffeehouse, some answers to questions I saw here over the summer and some thank you's.

Rory, in one of his final interviews for Channel 9 turned around the camera and interviewed me (Jeff :-)) for Channel 9.

Here's the description Rory wrote for this piece:

Jeff Sandquist was there at the beginning. He has been behind the scenes at Channel 9 for years. He was part of the initial crew and has had a tremendous impact on the development of the site ever since. Oddly, despite his core involvement, Jeff has never before done a Channel 9 interview. Here, we get to talk to him just after he's come back from taking several months off, and he's in a very, very good mood :)

Matt Winkler and David Tesar catch up with Shawn Burke to talk about the announcement today that the source for the .NET Framework will be made available.

In this video we find out about how this is all going to work and see it in action as Shawn steps into the Windows Forms code from Visual Studio. Shawn also talks about how this has been something he has been working on for a long time in order to bring a really deep debugging experience for .NET developers.

Lots of excitement about this today for sure.
