That is why we specify that this method is only available for testing packages on Windows 2008 and Vista. For other platforms, the batch file method is the only way currently to test applications packages.
I'm not sure I understand your concern with using the batch method. Seeing the installed application as a result is the way to test the package. If it installs correctly using the batch file method with valid parameter values provided, then you are most of the way there. The only things that don't get tested using that method are the way the tags influence the user interface. However, the number of tags is small, and you can see many examples of how they are rendered by installing any of the other applications in the Gallery.
